Bald Eagles are HUGE...we lived out off a dirt road for a while....I was driving home and one swooped in and just kinda coasted in front of my car for about 50 ft....i was simply shocked how wide the wing span was.

Pretty cool!

It won't be long and my area will be seeing more of them for the season. There was one that's been hanging around all year. I took some pics of it in September, but they were with my pocket camera which just wasn't strong enough on the zoom.

Drive down Route 2 between Rockford and Dixon. There are some nesting areas along the Rock River. Nice Sunday drive since you are in Northern Illinois.

Oddly enough other than seeing them in zoos the Bald Eagles I've seen in the wild have been in the Florida Keys and Everglades.

All Righty Then

Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something, and ask yourself two questions:

1. Have you felt and known joy in your life
2. Have you given joy to someone else ....

Tell everyone about your car!

They are somewhat prevalent here in West Central Florida. MacDill AFB used to have 3-4 nesting pairs on the base. Seeing these majestic birds in person is one of the most awe inspiring moments ever.

1983, The one.

When I went Elk hunting up in Colorado in 2006 we saw one in the wild just chillin' on some rocks out in the middle of a "park" (what Colorado people call an empty expanse of ground). We stopped the trucks and I got out. This drew his attention but we could tell that all he was doing by looking at me was acquire a possible target. I took a couple of pics and went on my way.

When you see one in the wild just chillin' and watching everything going on around it, you understand why our founding fathers chose it as our national symbol over the turkey.

They are at Cross Winds Marsh in Carlton on Will Carlton Rd.........maybe a mile past the long "S" turns as you go west from I-275.
Here is a shot from the other side and you can see their nest.
Last year you could see their young poking their heads out of the nest

Charlie,

If you guys get a chance and want a change of scenery, there are nesting pairs of Bald Eagles closer to your house. One on Grosse Ile just north of Church St near Meridian....One pair at Pt Mouilee near the quarry off of Dixie....and one on Celeron Island if you have a boat. Just last year Grosse Ile residents were warned to keep their small pets inside due to Eagle attacks.

Very cool pics! I'll have to take that route the next time I go over my parents house in Ash Twp.
