California smog question (C3, LS1 swap)

I am looking around for a C3 between 1973 and 1975, which are smog exempt, so I can Put in this 2001 LS1 motor I have and daily drive it.

Question is, If I buy a 1976-1980 (Not smog exempt) and do the LS1 swap, what do I need to do as far as the DMV is concerned to get it smogged and not have registration issues?

Thanks in advance..
-Chris..

This is just a guess so take it with a grain of salt but, I am going to say you have to meet the smog requirements of the year of the motor. So if you have an 02 LS motor, the requirements of the old car would have to meet 02 smog requirements. Best to check with your DMV to be sure.

Have you considered the E-Rod LS engine from GMPP? They have all the cats and necessary equipment to pass the CARB, but I'd check with the DMV like others said so no miscommunication will be brought on.

Check out...

I'm not in CA but every time I've read about an experience with this, I come away with the understanding that the Smog Referee Center process is outrageously expensive and frustrating.

They don't call them the "Smog Nazi's" for nothing. Stay away, stay far away. These guys are ugly and not at the top of the smarts chain of evolution.

I do live in CA and I have had a few run ins with them. First was the 1969 435H car that fried the referee's analysis machine. He was not a happy guy.

Then my whipple supercharged 1994 Yukon, took me three months to get it to pass smog because the fuel pressure regulator was adjustable. Never mind that it passed the sniffer test with flying colors. I had to prove to them it came with an adjustable regulator. Some book they had said no adjustable regulators were ever approved. It was a good thing I saved the install instructions that said how to adjust it. I had to take that to the CARB to get the website changed. UGLY and expensive!!

Take my advise, don't go there. My current project is a 1970 and no smog is required in CA. The EROD engine would be the best way around them. It is 50 state legal for cars that require smog.

Contact Vettezuki at VM or MG for info. He did this swap with an 82, and passed.
Basically, you have to transplant ANY smog device from the donor car to the new car.I.E., evap canister, computer, yada yada. I don't believe the referee cost anything. He will know.

Hay.. I have a 79 Corvette that I'm restoring with an LS1 from a 2001 Camaro in CA. And I had to restore all the emission system from the new car to the old. This includes fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel level, EVAP sys., fuel return line, with pressure regulator and stock catalytic converter.
You can do this with the stock computer control engine.

And the easy way out is to do like I did and moved to Missouri.
