Like so many in government, Romney was misinformed. While small companies do create many jobs they also lose many jobs. If you group these small companies together their net job generation is 0. There is a substantial amount of information available documenting this that can be researched.

Also, mere job creation numbers aren't the whole story. Small businesses tend to create lots of low paying jobs. They don't make many jobs that pay $75k+. On the other hand, large corporations make lots of middle management jobs or union jobs that pay those wages.

Romney was correct in one sense: Small businesses DO create lots of jobs (generally lower paying). And while they may not be the most desirable jobs, we are in a job market crisis and every job counts. Regulations and taxation that make succeeding in small business more difficult DO hurt the job creation market.
