How do you win a bid on a project that is basically "Renovate the big house and tear down the small house", and not understand the basic parameters?

You get what you paid for ... or not.

In France, a building like this can't be destroyed, they are protected by law.

Now, who is to say, the owner didn't pay the Poles to destroy the house and build a new one, identical, without the inconvenience of the old one.

That is a real possibility. We had a contractor who had a historic building on a property he bought. There was a clause in the deed that restricted what could be done to the building and it required approvals from the county historical building commision, to do anything. One day his bulldozer "accidently" drove through the structure and it had to be razed. He was then able to build a huge home on the lot and made a killing.

I think this happens all the time.
