There is a lot of confusion between BAUD rate and bps.
The baud rate is related to but should not be confused with gross bit rate expressed in bit/s.

Yup, I was using a 300 baud modem to get on Fidonet in the early 80's. It was basically an amateur network for software sharing that was completely DOS based (obviously). When I got my first 1200 baud modem, I thought I had entered the jet stream of data transfer and thought more speed was unnecessary. By the time we hit 14.4k, my head was spinning.
