Thats so trye and very sad at the same time. The days of an athlete acting like a good role model are gone. Thats why I keep my money and time out of professional sports and put it into my children alone instead. Don't get me wrong. I would have loved to take my kids to a ball game or two in the recent past, but I cannot explain away the new professional athletes actions to them. Its sad. But this choice did get me alot of quality time with the kids.

Take those kids to a baseball game. Yeah there are a few no-goods, but the majority are good role models. No better bonding than a father-son at a ballgame IMO.

I agree when they are 18. I am speaking to my younger boys. I also have two older who you might find on a stool next to you. Its thier decision from then on.
Raising kids is like a . You do the best you can and hope for the best. It's my 20 year old daughter that I worry about the most tho.

That's why I always had "Mad" respect for Barkley, because he said what all the other athletes were thinking, but didn't have the courage to say.
Athletes know that the media builds them up, wait for them to make a mistake, then have fun as they bring in the wrecking the ball.
Athletes are just that... athletes.. and entertainters. Why in the hell would any parent with common sense want any entertainer to be their role model. If that's the case, then the parent has failed!
As Wyatt Earp said on the use of the term "Hero", "only children and fiction writers throw that term around". The same could be said of the term "role model".

I agree totally. That’s why I don't take them to any professional sports games or express any real concern for professional sports. Young kids are very impressionable. They can take to a team very quickly and then they idolize the players like rock stars. So instead, I spend as much time with them as I can and try to be the role model for them myself. I place more importance on their grades, their character, and their empathy and understanding towards others.
If you are expecting somebody else to be your role model, you “have” failed.
