I find that next to impossible to believe. Microsoft and security are oxymoron's. It is their operating system that is constantly being compromised. If they new anything about security, their operating system wouldn't be getting hacked to death, along with their worthless web browser. If anything, the software you're using found a false positive that Kaspersky was smart enough to disregard.
I wouldn't trust Microsoft to watch my BBQ grill while I made a head call.

I can retrieve data off of any kind of drive as long as the drive works. If you plug the drive into your computer and the computer recognizes it but the data is missing, I can retrieve it 99% of the time. If the computer doesn't recognize it no matter what computer you plug it in, that's another story.
Which of those two scenarios are you experiencing?

I've been on the Internet since 1994. I think that I have seen all the porn the Internet has to offer... twice.

Firstly, this company, like many others, probably has a unique EULA. As such it is generically worded for all the products they sell.
They most probably have products for which you purchase a "lifetime" license.
In their case, the "lifetime" license is attached to the life of the computer on which you physically install the software for the first time.
If you replace that computer you will need to acquire another "lifetime" license.
Furthermore, this company has determined that the lifetime of a computer is at most 5 years. Therefore, after 5 years, you need to repurchase a "lifetime" license, even if you have not replaced your computer.
This being said, this wording gives them leaway to rebill you a full license in 5 years.
For the sake of clarity, I will take an example with hypothetical values (with inflation).
Year 1: You purchase the software license (70$) and 1 year maintenance (30$), that is to say 100$ paid.
Year 2: You purchase the maintenance of said software: 32$
Year 3: You purchase the maintenance of said software: 34$
Year 4: You purchase the maintenance of said software: 37$
Year 5: You purchase the maintenance of said software: 42$
Year 6: You need to repurchase software license and associated maintenance at the price of the time. You can't just pay maintenance because the SW license is limited to 5 years.
Understand the wording?

What makes Avast better? I've been using AVG Free for years and it's done the trick, but if Avast does something better, I might be willing to give it a shot.

if you look in the details:
Avast scans P2P stuff (during the transfer) whereas AVG scans after downloading.
AVG has social networking protection and link checking which is convenient for certain users.
Junk, an avid P2P porn down-loader will go for avast.
My niece, an avid socialite, will go for avg.

And I don't need any scientific study to explain why you should. I have real world experience to base my opinions on. I have fixed a slew of computers that were running AVG. The program was reporting the virus but the program had already allowed the virus to drop its payload. I have also fixed some computers that were infected while running Avast but they are far and few compared to those running AVG. Some of the simplest stuff will get past AVG.
Now I have been running Kaspersky since 1999. Not ONCE have I ever been infected since then. My girlfriend's computer was attacked while running Kaspersky but the program quarantined the virus and thus, it could do no damage. That's why I run Kaspersky on all my computers and every server that I manage. I swear by that program as the virus definitions are being updated at least 6 times a day. Being Russian based, they are battling a lot of the infections before they make it state side. It is by far the best on the market and the only thing I tell people to buy is their most basic protection. That's all you need.
