Obama will capitulate on some significant cutting of entitlements, IMO. He has to. It is the only way he will get big enough reductions which will help lower the long term deficit. He knows it and does not want to have that (the deficit) as his legacy.

I hope your are correct, but I would not bet on it.
I'd call that blind faith.

IMO Obama is placing his hope in the economy getting amazingly better very soon and an influx of "revenue" as he likes to call it from a booming economy, hoping that he can add that accomplishment to his only real accomplishment of being the first half black POTUS. I think the House will roll over and the rich will be taxed higher. This will do nothing to improve the economy and revenue will remain unchainged. If it affects the economy at all, it will hurt things, which could have the opposite result of Obama's hopes. The next 4 years will be a transformation this country has never imagined.

No, I know you're not but I was a bit irritated when I read that. I know it's the Gubment. Every one of them, red, blue, brown as in the color of tea.....all of them. They're ALL scrambling around looking for something else to pawn so they can get their fix. The government is broken beyond repair.

We're spending billions, if not trillions trying to make the whole world a democracy and it's not working. China has been around and had a functioning society for a gazillion years. They had medical care while most of the world was dancing in circles trying to ward off evil spirits.

China, while not a democracy, has a bunch of cash and they have bought a lot of America. We've only been here a few hundred years and there's no way that we can make it another hundred if we keep doling out money. Somebody is going to own us and the democratic experiment will come to an end.

There's no free stuff to give out. We don't have it. We're trying to buy our way into the hearts and minds of most nations by giving them money that we're borrowing from China. We're giving money to Arab countries so they can buy weapons to fight against us. Ignorance....just pure and simple ignorance.

Let's just keep all our foreign aid and use that money to pay down our debt. I give a lot to charity but if I had no money I'm certain that I'd give less. So would any sane person on the planet. Regretfully, none of those sane folks live in Washington. Nearly everything that our government does makes no sense. We really need a revolution. Get a big assed broom and sweep DC clean and start from scratch with people that don't belong in a mental institution and have IQ's bigger than their shoe size.

Republican or Democrat makes no difference. They're all ignorant asses who live in La-La land and have no grasp on reality. We're lost and are just marking time trying to extend the end. It's coming and we're powerless to do anything about it. Hell, I'm an optimist and this whole post has been optimistic.

So for Obama to be a man of his word, the first answer assumes that he would have had to have given his word that he would cut entitlements. I never heard him say that...did you??

Duh. You got me. No, I don't think Obama has said he would cut entitlements. But he has hinted he would make unspecified spending cuts. As for the definition of "entitlements", I'm using the one everyone in Washington uses. That means all forms of welfare plus SS and Medicare. Yes, we paid into those programs, but once we start collecting, we are "entitled" to those payments. I think the word as Washington uses it is just a convenient way to lump in all of the regular payments to citizens, which happens to be far and away the biggest piece of the budget pie.

I think most people are confusing entitlements with welfare.

Entitlement: I am entitled to this money. I paid into the system, and I am entitled to receive what I paid for.

Welfare: I receive something for nothing.

Get it straight !

We should not cut entitlements.

We should abolish welfare. Welfare is the job of your church or charity. Instead of churches building multi-million dollar monuments to themselves to worship in, this money should be used to help the down trodden. Charities, well, charities are not much more than a money grabbing business for their founders.
