Yeah I know what you mean. I dont want Cashmere baby butt smooth leather in my sports car that would add 20K+ to price, just a decent layout fit for a sports car with decent material quality that befits a car in this price range.

Honestly, since this is the flagship of GM I think they should eat up some of the markup on the Vette. This is a car that people in the GM family aspire to, a rolling advertisement for the average car buyer buying the small econo car moving his/her way up through the product line. Unless of course your rich and can buy it right off the bat.

My biggest pet peave is not necessarily the lack of leather all over the interior, it is the general layout of it. Dont get me wrong, the quality of material matters to myself. ( I believe the ZR1 uses faux leather. Really?!?!) But falls below my list of priorities. If the general layout was more busiiness like, I would not mind taking a hit in materials. (Look at the lotus Elise)

I dont think that each model Corvette (Base, GS, Z06 and Zr1) should have a completely different interior, just a differnt attention to details. You would be surprised if you add small touches here and there, what that does to the feel of the car. As you go up in price the real sport bucket seats in the Z06 should be standard and an option on the base model or any lesser model. The Zr1 should be the pinnacle of all racing parts and should be an option to the "lesser" models. When you single out individual pieces for each model then the prices reach obnoxious prices, but when you make it available to all models the price is stretched out and made more practical.

Just look at the new Viper interior, they give you choices. Something that we all can benifit from. I think they have 8 wheel choices as well as interior choices.

Relatively speaking, the Corvette, as a sports car is a high volume seller. If SRT can create an interior like that at $144K, at low volume. economies of scale would suggest that the Corvette team can come up with a half decent interior that would be somewhat cheaper for them. Chevy makes a bigger profit on the Corvette than the Dodge guys on the Viper. I think the Corvette can take a somewhat hit on profit margins to put a interior worthy of a car in in the $124K+ range.

The Chevy guys did a much better interior on the 100th anniversary interior, but nowhere near as the SRT VIPER.

The Nissan GT-R has the same bang for buck as the Vette and they managed to put quality materials in their car. Bang for buck is longer an excuse for chintzy interior pieces. like I stated before, I don't think they should put an interior that befits a luxury car with all unobtanium and alacantra pieces in the car, just change the layout where it doesn't look like it belongs in a Chevy Malibu. I LOVE the looks of the new Viper. The only aspect of the styling I don't like too much is the headlights. But they're ok. I think the Viper team hit a homerun.

Your right, there is something off about the headlights. The design of the car looks very cohesive until we get to the front. Maybe because the rest of the car looks unmistakingly Viper, designed by the original Viper team and the the front was designed by the Italians because the Americans were out sick that day. A collaborative effort gone astray.

I agree, the car is a home run. Despite the front, I really like the direction they took this car.

Nissan was loosing it's ass on the GT-R, thus the graph below

IMHO, this interior is no better then the 3LT interior in the Corvette, and at least you get some color options with the Corvette.

well the front looks cheap
the front lights have a very weird shape. if you look at the curve...looks "undecided" - amateur. not sure how to explain, but the entire front looks way too busy. the first viper had a very strong character.
the rest is..."okay so the viper is getting the new 911 now?" almost nothing has changed since the gen1. sorry mr Gilles, but this design is not forward thinking. it completely ignores the second generation, at it looks like they just had to do something CHEAP. (and fast)
they didn't take RISKS AT ALL
there is absolutely not a single element that is really new. okay, they have a new B-pillar... and what about the rest?

what i'm trying to get out of all this, that the Vette will bring new cues to its design. they might not be appealing to everybody, but hey at least they are trying.
can't say this about the viper design team.

if you have a new generation, and you don't change anything on the old one, they what's the purpose on the first place????

PS
what happened to the Tom Gale design team anyway?
can you recall what cars they designed? I mean compared to their era, that Viper and Intrepid and co was very modern looking. Now going back there after 20 years.... c'mon, be serious.

check this out and tell honestly you like the new one better

more pics here

I don't know if you read my previous post with Junkman, I don't particularly like the layout of the Nissan GT-R, but when I sat in one the materials were top notch. No plastic creaks you get with the Vette. The seats on the GT-R are rock solid, they didn't feel as if they were put together with twigs, rope and gum.

The pics above show the comparison between a 100 year anniversary Vette that cost quite a bit more than the regular z06 and Zr1. So GM is charging extra for a interior that should have been executed in the first place. The Zr1 should at the very least have had that interior from the beginning.

These two pics remind me of the interior of the Vette. Interiors and rear tail lights seem to be GM's archilles heel, unfortunately.

P.S. Junkman... You should be proud. look at me posting pics.

This is the interior that was in the Black Edition that I road in. When I first got in the car, I just thought it was another Japanese sedan. I didn't know what a GTR was. I was blown away by the performance but the interior really didn't impress me all that much at all. It was a lot easier for me to get in and out of compared to these damn Lambo's. Man, I'm getting old!

Now this interior reminds me of a late 1900's Mustang. I'm not too crazy about it.
