The article never gives Dorsey's explanation for what happened. I would like to see that. The fact that the military let him stay in, and he has attained the rank of Captain, tells me there were mitigating circumstances. It sounds like he has been a good officer for the remainder of his career, but a hit like that on his record should preclude him from making the rank of Admiral.

If the hit was intentional, how in the hell could he have been promoted this far?

"At the time, his father, James Dorsey, commanded the carrier USS America. He later attained three-star rank as a vice admiral."

That says everything I need to know...

He had an Admiral Daddy. The IG report stated he knew it was a friendly and he intended to fire a live missile. I wonder what happened to his RIO if his career ended or if he was allowed to continue on as well.

Mmmmmm. An Admiral daddy can help a young buck through some minor scrapes. But I don't think that's enough clout to bail out something this big. There has to be more to the story. Don't forget, if he was a Lt. j.g., he was probably about 24-25 years old. The military will forgive a lot of things if there is some reasonable excuse or at least some mitigating circumstance. But having a big thing like this forgiven early in a career will still usually torpedo a path to flag rank.
