Looks like the corvette team realized we hated the taillights

From yahoo auto news

Quote:

"Purists have already begun to exclaim over the loss of the Vette’s trademark round taillamps; the new squarish units take that shape because their frames double as a cooling vents."
src: http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoram...235611949.html

They already created an excuse for the square talilights. (Which it to cover their tail for a bad design decision no doubt.) I find this excuse hard to believe as the vents are on the side away from the lights. They could have made the lights round without issue.

That looks to be a quote from the Yahoo writer, not anyone at GM.

My opinion....time to get over the taillights.

To each their own, I'm sure there's some people who even think Bar Refaeli is ugly...

In fairness...

I don't think the majority of complaints are about the tail lamps per se... If they weren't buried in an avalanche of weirdness--raccoon vents, Aztec-like mouldings and angles-- I don't think the lights would be an issue for most of us.

There are some cool motifs in there. The quad pipe treatment is both cool and elegant. The lower side vents are right off the race track. But the rest, oy... what were they thinking...?

Okay...

The chromed vent fins on the air splitter look silly and out of place.

The interior looks like it came from the C4, widely accepted as the WORST of the corvette interiors (minus seats) It's flat and lifeless and the instruments looks like they were glued game controller buttons on instead of being a cohesive piece of the car. There is no modern design there. The edges are harsh and non flowing. The steering wheel is hideous. I like the Cobalt steering wheel better then this.

Also digital displays are impossible to read in bright sunlight.

There's a glaring blind spot in the rear glass panel now too.

As an engineer I'm not buying marketing gimmics that frame is 57% stiffer. (Unless they did something funny with the halo bar.) I would like to know their measuring metrics. I don't care what alloy of mg-al they are using. Aluminum adds certain design issues including weld impurities that lead to cracks and a weaker weld over time (unless they weld it under a class VIII gas.) The Z06 has to have a FRC roof because of frame strength loss due to the crossover to Al. Aluminum also suffers work fatigue at a much quicker rate then steel. This will lead to a looser ride with time. This isn't a problem with airplanes which are rivited and designed to flex.

Shall I continue?

And not to nit pick, but why do you think the reporter said the taillights were square because of the vent? Do you think he made that up? (Poor reporting on his part if the case) Or do you think someone fed it to him?

Did you actually read the article ??? It is very simple. If the corvette would stay a live it need to change . It still is true to the original concept V8 ohv front engine rwd. They just gable on the design to get young people back. Lets face it , the camaro is a much more cooler car than the corvette and if that doesn't change soon the corvette legacy could very well end in the near future.

The frame is now made in house and consists of 4 pieces, each engineered specifically for a purpose. The previous frame was all one piece hydroformed rails. It is entirely possible that this new frame is 57% stiffer, since it is more purpose built.

C7 Frame

C6 Frame

If you watch this video, they explain everything.

^^^^^^^^ This. Exactly this.

The lights are weird and fairly pointless, but not the end of the world. Its the unbelievable array of shapes and polygons and lines and chaos. Aztec indeed.

I truly thought, and being an optimist hoped, that it would look more normal in real pics than it did in all the renders, but it doesn't. Its plain weird looking.

The one saving grace is that its not all red in the back, at least blacking out the bottom saves a guy from having to look at some of the chaos they created.

"every line matters", except ALL THE ONES ON THE BACK, save the two vents, which have nothing to do w the taillights.

One can also buy those fake fender portholes too.
Unless you own a 50-60's Buick they are not necessary, however.

Cool

I really wished they had done something along the lines of this...

I think the aftermarket will have an opportunity for business by making them.
