A modded LS1 can be a great motor with big performance but it can be a double edged sword for a do it yourselfer because you become VERY dependent on the TUNE and consequently the TUNER. Being in NJ there are plenty of good tuners around.
I had a stroked NA LS7 in my '98 TA and I ran mid 9's with it but I hated being so depenent on the guy with the laptop and the dyno so I sold it and now have a carb on top of my sbc.
As far as the pulley clearing the crossmember I say so what?
You can always modify the crossmember to clear the pulley-no big deal.
