Couldn't pass it up....

Got a smokin deal on a '92 700R4 today. Just couldn't say no.... So looks like I am rippin out the 400....

30 spline input shaft, flex plate, torque converter, and it's pretty clean. The fluid has great color, and no burnt smell...that's a good start.

The torque converter looks like it could be for a V6, not real sure yet. I've read that some people do this on purpose....haven't found the reason why though. I wouldn't think that the V6 models would hold the power the same.

Ironic thing is that I ALMOST ordered the transgo kit for the 400 yesterday...something made me hold off... Crazy.

I know many of you said stick with the 400...but every thing I've read about that first gear says gimme! But honestly....most importantly... I like the additional gear. That was my critical decision. When I drove it, and it was rapping that high, I didn't like it. I want lower RPM's for cruising. Done deal.

So now I've got to get the drive shaft shortened, and relocate the cross member....fun!

...anything special about our drive shafts? I was thinking of finding another Chevy drive shaft and having it altered on the side...

You'll love the extra gear!
"Vette drive shafts are like any other in that they are easier to shorten than to lengthen!!!
Good luck with the install.

Read that as WAY CHEAPER!!

700R4 trans kit-- get the clutches and steels for a 4L60 and the rubber seals and paper for your 700. 4L60's are thinner and you can stack a couple more into each pack. More surface area. Make sure you keep the pack clearance in specs.
Get a TransGo kit, at least a 10 vane pump kit with hardened rings, (I've heard there are 13 vane kits- have not seen one) and the BRUTE sunshell. 92 will have the late design rear planetary so that's good. Add a Vette 2-4 servo, TV valve and go. Unless you want to fool around figuring out the wiring for the TC lockup, get the hydraulic lockup valve.

Horsepower is like potato chips. If you have 300, you want 500. If you have 500, you want 800. One is never enough.

I have a trans crossmember for a 700r4 from Bowtie Overdrives if you are interested. Also have a B+M megashifter as well and I "think" a shifter cable-I'd have to check. PM me if you are interested.

Go to shift works (google it ) they have all brackets and detent ect for the shifter assembly and cable.

Also with the 3.08 rear let us know how it does in 4th gear it may stumble or buck .

What were your highway rpms sitting at? I would think with a 3:08 gear and the 400 it wouldnt be too bad.

My RPM's were just over 3K @60... And from what I understand, that's right on the money for that trans/rear end.
I don't know why it would buck. I'm guessing that cruising, my RPMs should drop down to like 1800-2200. Which would be great. I sized my cam for max power in the cruising range.

I'll check out the information you guys sent. Thanks.
As for the cross member, I know it has to be relocated, but the factory one can't be reused? I don't remember what I read on that one. I know I have it book marked though.

26.5" roughly. Something not adding up, should be no more than 2600 rpms at 60 mph. Is your speedo working correctly?

th400 W/ 3:08'S...
As far as I know it's fully functional and accurate. I've probably only put 20 miles on the car so far. Definitely haven't had the GPS in it or anything for checking. In a previous post, someone with the same setup said spot on.... That's about all I know.

You cant have a 3.08 rear and spin 3k at 60 . You should be 2400 at 60 ,,if you have a 3.73 rear you would be at 2900

If you have 295/50's on 15" wheels, and you're running 3k at 60, then you're going through a final drive ratio of either 3.90:1 or 4.11:1.

My C4 with 4.10 rear gears and slightly taller tires is turning right around 2900 RPM at 60MPH in 4th.

Based on the information here, the 700R4 should make a good fit for what you have - unless your speedometer is off.

Good Luck!

Steven

If energy and enthusiasm were a substitute for experience and expertise, then I could hire my 12 year old to do this job.
