I only tip if the service is worthy of said tip. A tip is a bonus for above standard service, not something automatically given.
When we go to a restaurant in a group, we intentionally split it up to avoid the automatic gratuity. IMO the automatic gratuity should be a discount, not a price increase. Why would any smart business increase their prices for a group that brings in a large purchase?
If the service is above standard, I tip- how much is dependent on how far above standard the service is. If the service sucks, I have a chat with the manager.

The servers get nailed for 8% of the check as income whether you leave a tip or not. They have to pay state, local, and federal tax, as well as Medicare and Social Security taxes on that 8% of the check.
If you don't leave at least that amount, you are costing the waitress money. I have yet to experience service so bad that it made me want to reach in the server's pocket and take out money.
Don't be cheap. Plan on 15% as the price of the meal. 20% for good service as a recognition of the effort. More if you feel the person deserves it.
If anyone eats at the same place more than once and leaves no tip, be sure that getting your food spit on is the least of the things that will happen to it.
You may not feel that you "need" to tip, but I assure you that you have eaten a lot of spit, snot, floor spice, and other toppings not fit for this forum. Go to 1:32 for reference.

no problem, I don't go back to places where I have had bad service. The places where I do frequent the service is great and the waitresses are taken care of.

My baseline tip walking in is 15% if the waitress does nothing more than take my order, bring my food, and at least come in and out of the room so that I can flag her down when/if I need a refill. It goes up to 20% if she comes by during the meal and asks how things are and/or if I need a refill. That seems like pretty low standards to me. Please correct me if I am asking too much.
It is very rare, but I have walked out without leaving a tip and I don't go back to that establishment. IMHO, you are very lucky if you have never had service (or lack of service) worthy of no tip.

This pretty much sums up what the standard for service is.

I was a waiter at a decent restaurant for about a year. I had fun with it. I met a lot of women and got some hookups. The male waiters got to feed the Cherries that were on top of the little cakes to the female customers during birthdays. At 19 seeing what a woman could do to a cherry and the stem........
I got stiffed a few times but I never spat or did anything bad to anyone's food. It was one of those things that I never thought about doing.
I dont think the Pastor was being very Christian. If you dont like it then don't go out to eat.

One time, at a restaurant where I worked, a table of guys left a few coins on the table for a waitress' tip. She was so pissed, she went out to the parking lot, yelled at them, "Here, you need this more than I do!", then threw the change at their car.
We laughed our asses off.

I'd then sue her for any damage to the vehicle.

She threw a few coins at the car. Probably no perceptible damage. The car was pretty beat too if I remember.
So good luck with the lawsuit. Besides, she got paid shit, and received crappy tips from asshole customers.
