marvel mystery oil

I was talking to a friend of mine, happens to be very knowledgable about cars, engines, imo, so i was discussing with him that i wanted to get his input on my changing my oil in my gs every 4000 mi instead of the usual 3000 mi like i've been doing with all my cars since the beginning of time, i use royal purple and k&n filter. He said he sees no problem with it but i should put in a quart of mystery oil in the oil about 500 mi before i change it so when i do all the oil will drain out and mystery oil will clean the engine. I just want to get some thoughts on this to see what your opinion is of doing this, kinda sounds easier to just change my oil every 3000 mi instead of doing this but i'd like some input anyway. what are your thoughts, opinions of mystery oil anyway? thanks for your time.

First off, isn't the recommended oil life for the C6's 6,000 miles?

I really see no point of using the Mystery Oil. It's good for loosening gunk and sludge, but in this case you should not need it.

I agree with Chris. In a late model car, I would follow the manufacturer's recommendations exactly. I definitely would not use Marvel oil in a new car. I believe you are supposed to change the oil when the DIC tells you it's time. It isn't just a mile-based action. The computer keeps track of engine use and will tell you when it needs changing - usually 6-7.5k. They synthetic oils like Mobil One do not need to be changed every 3000 miles.

From the 2013 GS manual:

Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has a computer that
indicates when to change the
engine oil and filter. This is based
on a combination of factors which
include engine revolutions, engine
temperature, and miles driven.
Based on driving conditions, the
mileage at which an oil change is
indicated can vary considerably. For
the oil life system to work properly,
the system must be reset every time
the oil is changed

thanx for your input, i thought that would be the consensus. understand i've been changin my oil in every car i've owned, even the two c5's i owned, every 3000 mi, some habits are hard to break. i'll try and wait it out the 6000 mi. it won't be easy. thanx again.

It used to be called Rislone if i recall correctly.... a few days before the oil change, you were to add it... i believe it was a detergent of sorts.... but i would only do that to an older car that i don't know what the maintence history was... new vettes use Mobil 1 and you should go by the oil life monitor... personally i change it if it hits below 30% life

Just make sure that if you go for 6000 miles that you check the dip stick once in a while to make sure the oil is at an acceptable level. Even if you have a "low oil" light, they've been known to not work (ask Patrick).

Modern Oils don't need to be changed as often. Even regular petroleum based oils can last 4-5000 miles depending on how you use the car, how old the engine is, etc. Synthetics can go even longer, especially Royal Purple. That stuff is amazing. Can't wait too long of course, regardless of oil type due to the crap that gets in there (combustion byproducts, condensation, etc.), but that's the limiting factor now, not the break down of the oil itself as it was in the past.

I've been going by the oil life on my DIC. Once it gets to 15%, I'll make an appointment.

I check my oil level about once a week - depends on how many miles you drive.

I've also been told by my mechanic that the oil should be changed after 6 months, even if it hasn't been driven much.

I also change my oil every 3,000 miles, I use Mobile. I see no need for any additives.

BTW, that DIC percentage thing cannot measure the dirt that may be in your oil.
