On the Corvette, the engine hood is held up gas hood struts; over time the gas leaves the strut.
When this happens, you need to change the struts because if you don't the hood can bang back or even worse bang you on the head whilst you are working in the engine bay, or harm your trusty helpers, such as in my case:
For what it's worth, mine lasted around 5 years but with the house and all, I didn't get around to changing them until now.
Changing the hood struts is very simple and straightforward.
First thing is to open the hood and to put something in place so that it doesn't fall on you when you take the struts off!
I just took a 2x4 (with the construction I have plenty of those laying around) but just about anything should do, even a trusted assistant
These struts hold on to the hood and engine bay area by the means of a small ball.

The struts don't fall off because there is a small spring that holds it into place and prevents the ball head from leaving the cage; as you can see on this photo:
Now if you pull the spring back with a small flat screwdriver like this:
Then the spring will allow the strut to detach itself from the ball because it is not longer in the way:
Removing the strut is very simple:
1. Remove the spring on one end
2. Remove the strut from the ball
3. Remove the spring on the other end
4. Remove the strut from the ball.
Replace with a new strut and don't forget to push the spring back into place.
The strut is not interchangeable, the sleeve goes on the hood and the piston (the part that goes into the sleeve) goes on the engine bay are.
Personally, I remove the hood side first, then the engine bay side. When I mount, I do it in reverse order.
