For Folks Who Run Radar Detectors in VA or DC

As you may know, radar detectors are illegal in those 2 places. The police in those areas have way of detecting that you are using a radar detector, even if it is hidden or not immediately visible but is in use. Some manufacturers will claim that their detectors are invisible to these detection devices. Don't believe the hype. All radar detectors can be detected and usually you pay a fine and have your unit confiscated. You don't have to be speeding to be caught, as a matter of fact the infraction is NOT a moving violation.

So, if you're thinking about running radar in DC or VA, think twice. Here's more info on the subject.

Introducing the Spectre IV
Radar Detector Detector

The next generation in detector detection.

The Spectre IV mounts securely to the windshield and can be rotated a full 360 degree.

Commercial vehicle operators who illegally use radar detectors in the United States have another reason to worry about being caught. It's Stealth Micro System's latest generation Radar Detector Detectors, the Spectre IV and Spectre IV+.

That's because federal law prohibits drivers of commercial motor vehicles from using radar detectors. In fact, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation 392.71 prohibits these drivers from even possessing a radar detector. Plus, radar detectors are illegal in all vehicles in Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

And although the radar detector manufacturers may say that their devices are undetectable, the Spectre IV detects hundreds and hundreds of radar detector models certified for use in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission. That's because all radar detectors, including those that feature "cloaking" or "VG-2 Alert," work the same way. Radar detector makers can shift their local oscillator frequency or try to better shield their devices, but those steps are just temporary fixes.

Stalker Radar, the world leader in radar and laser speed measurement, is the exclusive United States distributor.

The Spectre IV and IV+ feature electronic circuit design enhancements for improved sensitivity, more accurate target acquisition, and greater range, while the Spectre IV+ has a unique control allowing the user to better isolate illegal radar detectors in commercial vehicles in locations where radar detectors are legal for private vehicles.

The Spectre IV and IV+ spot radar detectors by detecting electromagnetic "leakage" from a component common to every radar detector, the local oscillator. Some manufacturers try to screen out the leakage with shielding; others try to adjust the leakage to a frequency that the Spectre isn't sensitive to. So far all radar detector manufacturers have failed and their products are easily detected by the Spectre.

The Spectre IV and IV+ are about the size of a portable CD player and are mounted on the windshield of the patrol vehicle. They can be rotated 360 degrees so that it can detect detectors at all angles relative to the vehicle.

Hmm... didnt know they were illegal in private vehicles in those states. They're illegal in commercial motor vehicles in ALL states. Here in OK, we dont have to worry about such stupid laws... YET.

Yeah they're definatly illegal, and don't play around when they catch you with one. Pretty sure even if you're from out of state need to have it disabled or they can slam the hammer of justice on you.

What a waste of taxpayers money. It would make more sense just to mount a low cost rf transmitter every few blocks or so in these places. which would render the detectors useless. Then we would not be clogging up the court systems with useless tickets.

Just my 2 cents

Ah, but you miss the point. They aren't trying to prevent speeding,
they just want the $$.

Like the red light cameras here in Atl... they mail you a "ticket" but it
doesn't go on your record, you just get to pay the fine.

Whoops! They have those in Atlanta? Well thanks for the heads up Stephen!

Pretty sure if they don't have a picture of your face its dismissable in court. No way to proove it was you driving the car. Usually though camera tickets run around $40 and much easier to just send a check and get it out of the way.
