Bad grinding noise come from Right rear??

I have a grinding noise, sounds like metal on metal, from the right rear. I've pulled the tire off, brakes are fine, no gouges on caliper, U-joints are all tight and no movement there. Before I tear it all apart, what should I look for? It's on at 76 vet.

Did you inspect the emergency brake hardware on that side?

The emergency brake is inside the hats of the rear rotors.

I would look into that first.

U-joints are tight, but are they lubed?

Check the inside of your wheel. I just experienced a metal on metal noise on my 79 last weekend, and couldn't find anything wrong with the parking brakes I had just installed. Nothing made noise with the wheel off.

Come to find out, one of the spring clips holding the parking brake cable to the trailing arm had rotated slightly and wound up rubbing the wheel. D'oh.

Make sure the front tires aren't hitting the inner fender. Check for loose things like the cable clip, etc before pulling out the arms.

You might want to check to make sure the dust shield is not contacting the rotor. That can make an awful metal to metal sound.

If that is the problem, bend the shield away from the rotor and inspect the rotor for scarring.
