Corvette Envy

Has this happened to any of you?

When I'm driving my "other" car (a sensible Saturn) at the speed limit, there's always somebody who's going to pass me going faster. That's typical.

But when I'm driving my Corvette, it seems like EVERYBODY needs to pass me. Usually it's the drivers in the put-put econo cars or SUVs. I even had a utility truck "race" me one day. Are you kidding me?

I suppose everybody needs a reason to not slit their wrists (wow, I just went faster than a Corvette! I won't kill myself today!), but I find it odd that people in other cars need to prove that they can drive as fast as I can, even though all I have to do is drop a gear and I leave them behind. What's funny is, these people have to pass my at a much greater speed that the posted limit, which means one of these days, while I'm tooling along legally, they'll be snagged by a Smokie who sees them peddling faster.

I can't wait to see it happen!

Then there are folks who need to quiz me on why and how I can afford such a thing on my salary (I have a side-income from my novels) and those who need to brag that they get better gas mileage (until I tell them what the Vette gets).

Why all the envy?

I forget all of the above, of course, when I see another Vette driver and we wave at each other. It happened three times today! We know the score.

Could be that they want to get a good look at your car. I notice that I usually speed up to get next to a car worth looking at.

90% of the people on the road are morons. This is just one of hundreds of examples that justify this.

Also, today's family sedans are so isolated from the road that their drivers really have no idea how fast they are going.

Personally, when I see a Corvette I try to catch up to it in the adjacent land but match speed right were my window meets his exhaust just to listen to the sound

Edelbrock E-Force 1593 & Magnaflow exhaust for that healthy American sound. Before SC 354 RWHP, after SC 484 RWHP. That's all I can do and still pass California smog.

I drive BELOW the posted speeds about 98% of the time,and usually drive the wifes mercury or my 1996 corvette thats not all that modified, frankly I don,t need any tickets and being retired Im rarely in a huge hurry and old enough and experienced enough to know that even when I,m driving my 1985 corvette that can easily beat 90% of the street cars performance almost effortlessly, that theres no potential gains to be made, and a huge risk, if you engage in street racing.
my 1985 corvette is not that fast, it runs low 12s unless I turn on the nitrous and low mid 11s on giggle gas and its only a well built 383.
my older 1968 corvette (since sold) had a killer 496 big block and a full roll cage and easily went 10.26/137mph , but tended to attract a police escort almost every trip so it was hardly fun to drive, and it only got about 7 mpg.
yes you can build a really fast car, but once you get a car that will consistently run at least mid 12 second 1/4 mile times there little competition on the street, and going faster starts costing a great deal more money and takes far more maintenance time.
In my opinion, theres little sense in owning a car you can rarely drive, thats costs you a great deal of time and money

please don,t miss understand me here, its a hoot to have a car that can smoke the tires at the blip of the throttle or start the tires smoking from a 60 mph rolling start, but its not very practical, and gearing a car so it can run at 140 mph or more in most cases just means its lost a great deal of low speed acceleration potential that the correct gearing could get you back!
Im currently building up the list of components to do my own big block swap as Ive helped at least 6-7 other guys do now, the cars that result are a great deal of fun, but must be used on the track ,not the street to see the full potential.

Yes I Know what U mean I was driving on a two lane road to work last year, this Jerk was on my rear end because I was doing the speed limit 45mph. then the road open to 4 lanes on a bridge and then it goes back to 2 lanes, at the stop light I could see this Jerk was just waitting to gun it when the light changed green we drove off I wasnt really on it just keeping up with him I had the road so that meant he had to merge onto my Lane I didnt let off he proceded to stay now on the Shoulder and I let off he gunned it. But there was a Policeman on the other side the cop made a U turn and off he went after that Jerk Pulled him over. I Honked the Horn and waved at him as I slowly passed him By... Some people just have to pass a Vette..

I don't go over 80 MPH without a helmet and Hans. I haven't broke 80 in the Z for about three years now. The Z is just a regular street car to me. I let people pass without a second thought. Now strap me in my race car with all the safety gear. That's where I feel at home and care who passes me.
