77 Speedo gear selection

Without taking it apart, is there any way to tell which color gear I need for the speedometer cable?

Looks like 77 Autos either took the "natural" or "blue" gear, but when I took the cable off the tranny housing, the end looked red? I don't think it was fluid and it didn't look like the gear sleeve seal. Worse comes to worse, I just get both gears, pull it apart and then return the one I don't need.

I spun the cable right from the tranny housing and it moved the speedometer, so now the ONLY thing left is this gear, correct?

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure my gear was red in my 77'. It has been a long time since I had that thing apart. My spedo did the same thing, spun the cable and the spedo moved. changed out the gear in the tranny and worked perfect. The teeth on the gear were stripped. Good Luck.
