Body filler question

I see a lot of these cable shows where they use this very light green filler that gets applied all over every body panel, everywhere and then they block-sand it. Anybody know what type (name) and reason used (of course it's most likely good for block sanding but I hoping for some more info).

I dont know the name but my understanding is to get a car show smooth finish. I have seen it used all over the cars that are going to be on the circut and show only. I would do a search on Powerblocktv.com it is where I have seen it used and they have a good tech section.

Evercoat is the most popular brand as it sands very easy but any good filler will work.

Most likely Evercoat metal glaze. Thinner and lighter bodied than your conventional filler it is well suited for small imperfections or making a small skim fill on near finished bodywork. There is also a flexible variant used on bumpers.

I have read so much about fiberglass paint jobs having to use the wright materials, I would want a corvette body pro to recommend this procedure. From what I have read it is the life of the job to use the wright body fillers. Just my 2 cents take it for what it isMark

The Green stuff is a Lightweight polyester body filler.
Many brands are made but all give similar results. Most of that filler will be sanded off. Used by an experienced body man that cares, you will have a paintjob similar or better than a $10K pro painter performs.

Do you use it on fiberglass though? I only see it being used on metal.

When I had my car painted a few months back, since I had stripped the paint down to the bare fiberglass, you were able to see the imperfections in the body very well. Especially in the areas where the bonding seams are. The bodyman that worked on my car, (10+ yrs experience) used this same type of green polyester filler. He said he uses it on all cars, to be able to get that perfectly smooth finish after blocking and reapplying multiple times. It worked very well as every panel on my car is perfectly smooth with no waves, like there would be if this filler wasnt used.

I was surprised to see this exact product (what Rich is asking about) being used on Speed Channel yesterday. One of those Extreme car makeover shows, they were working on a 66 mustang fastback. The guy squirts a bead of green filler on to the door, out of a big caulking gun! Then spreads it with a regular plastic bondo spreader. The tube in the gun looked about 3" diameter and maybe 16" long. I've never seen it before, and it must be single component, as I didn't notice 2 tubes or 2 colors coming out.
I'm going to look further into this.

This post is timely as I saw it used on Legendary Motorcar (on Velocity) and was wondering what it was. I am in the process of stripping the paint off of my '77 and was wondering what to use on the panels before painting.

Well, I've searched the net some, emailed Darkside, and even talked to some of my local paint and body guys today and no one has heard of it. Must be pretty new. There's a similar looking product/gun made by Bondo, but it's not the same at all. My curiosity is up now and I really want to find out more!

The Green stuff lightweight polyester body filler is not new tech.
It has been around at least 5 years now.
I was told it was developed for NASCAR and NHRA Pro Stock paint use.
Too save on total paintjob weight on a vehicle.
One body man has told me average paint material hanging on a car weighs 20 -30lbs. Racers wanted a weight savings edge. Green stuff body filler was developed. Took a while to catch on.
Its not supposed to shrink ever, green polyester body filler.
Old body filler shrank with time.
Many body man in the past would let a car sit in primer for 1-6 months.
Go back and fill in shrinkage of body filler.
Glazing coumpound applied.
Then shoot paint.
No longer necessary with Green stuff filler.

I don't believe this material is that new. Some of these shows are repeats from several years ago.

Those large tube guns are available in electric, air drive and drill drive. I wonder if the mix comes in a premix and you have to load like the old grease guns?
