And the stupidity marches on..

It’s getting harder and harder to be a kid these days. Back in the day, children frequently played “cops and robbers” and other good vs. bad games at recess and around the house. Now they’re getting punished for it.

On the heels of three 6-year-olds being suspended for making gun signs with their hands during recess and a 5-year-old girl being suspended and labeled a “terrorist threat” for threatening to shoot her friend with a “Hello Kitty” bubble gun, a 7-year-old Colorado boy at Loveland’s Mary Blair Elementary School is reportedly in a similar position.

So what did he do? Apparently the 2nd grader was playing “rescue the world” at recess when he threw a pretend grenade at a make-believe box full of “evil forces.” There wasn’t actually anything in his hand, nor was there a real box.

“I was trying to save people and I just can’t believe I got dispended,” Alex Evans said. After demonstrating how the game is played, he said he threw fake grenade at the box “so nothing can get out and destroy the world.”

But his imaginary play broke the school’s real rules. The school lists “absolutes” designed to keep a safe environment. The list includes absolutely no fighting, real or imaginary; no weapons, real or imaginary. Click here to see the Mary Blair “Absolutes”

“Honestly I don’t think the rule is very realistic for kids this age,” says Alex’s mom Mandie Watkins.

Alex is like a lot of 2nd graders, perpetual motion. His mom says the little boy doesn’t understand why pretending to be a soldier was wrong. “I think that when a child is trying to save the world, I don’t think he should be punished for it.” [Emphasis added]

The mother adds that Alex will be staying home until they can get the issue resolved.

When this crop of kids gets out of school, there is going to be one huge pandemic of violence from the forced repression of natural aggressive play that's now occurring.

I bet if the kid said he was trying to save gays from being hurt by hateful white guys they'd give him parade.

...I don't think it's as much the kids fault as it is the paranoia
of the faculty and staff, but fear not the armed staff and
teachers would have stopped him....

You have hit the nail on the head. They would indeed be pinning ribbons on him for his bravery if he had chosen the right group to protect.

...actually I think he missed the nail, who's to say he doesn't
act like this at home, so you have never played Army with
your friends at home...

Are you kidding? That's all we ever did as kids. We were either fighting indians or Nazi's. We didn't have video games, and you get tired of sports games, so pretend battles were another way to pass the time. The "absolutes" on that school's list are just plain crazy.

Boys have more testosterone than girls...aggressive play is how males are wired. Gentrifiying the youth of this nation is not the answer to insanity.

Now THIS is stupid. Even I can remember playing games like this as a kid. So now imagination is out too?

And..um....what is paintball but an older kid version of this?

Please demonstrate ONE example showing that ANYONE had claimed ALL teachers should be armed. You keep spouting this, but it's simply not true.

...all I have ever read in the threads was "arm the teachers"
