How many of you are driving your C5's this week?

I'm only asking since I'm jealous. A shipping company truck slipped out of gear, backed up 2.5 feet and ran into mine yesterday.

$1700 in damage. I'll be without it for 10-12 days, and the driver has a $1000 deductible and can't afford to pay me for the repair unless he makes payments at $500 per month for 4 months.

At least he stopped, owned up to it and is going to take care of it. When he came in to tell me, he asked me if I lived on Rincon Dr. I said yes. He then asked if I knew Margaret and Linda who live across the street.

I replied "You mean your route manager, Margaret? Yeah, I know her pretty well."

He looked down and said "I need to make a call to see what to do here."

He called her. He told her he hit a car. She asked if they would work with him on payments. He said yes. Then he said "You're never going to believe who I hit."

Then he told her.

I was standing five feet away from him photocopying his driver's license and getting his phone and insurance information when she replied..."Are you shitting me! You hit Jim's Corvette he just bougth four months ago? My neighbor Jim? Jeezus...I am going to kick your ass myself when you come over for the Laker's game tomorrow night."

I felt bad for him. I have to draw up a document he's going to sign promising to pay for the damage.

If I report him he gets a ding on his driving record and he loses some benefits worth almost $1000 per month (according to my neighbor, his boss).

So rather than jack him up, raise his insurance rates and potentially make him lose his job, I'm going to float the repair on a credit card and make him pay the payments with the interest.

He should be getting over there any time now. I hope my neighbor doesn't kick his ass into next week.

But hey...at least I won't have any rock chips on my car from the windshield forward so the car's paint will look pretty decent when they're done.

But I'm not taking my car to get my mail at the mailbox place I rent from again.

Lesson learned.

So enjoy your C5's folks...you never know when they'll just be...sidelined. LOL

I'm driving mine! But I can paint it if I have to.

I have a much better idea. Have your neighbors pony up the money and have him pay them back. That way, he keeps his job, you are not out of any money, no points on his record, the neighbors don't have to report it to their insurance company and the most important part is, if he defaults, it's THEIR issue not yours.

The car looks great! Kudos for being willing to take a chance on the guy. You might get burned, but if it's a young guy hopefully he will learn a lesson and you will get paid in the long run.

P.S. I probably feel this way because when I was 18, I had a summer job driving a home delivery milk truck as a substitute for the regular drivers so they could take a vacation. One early morning, I backed up the truck and backed into a car parked on the street. I could have driven off and no one would ever know, but I left a note on the car and ended up paying for it myself. Sounds like this guy wanted to try to do the right thing. He WILL be more careful in the future, I guarantee.

I'm not worried about the water/snow/ice; it's the sand and salt. That salt gets in everywhere. You can't get that shit cleaned out. Not even the Junkman can clean that crap out of the undercarriage? Well maybe I think 92Roadster had a post on, "How to get your high pressure nozzle in those cracks & crevices....."
