Wierd speedometer problem

Speedometer reads 55 mph no matter how fast I am going. Needle is not stuck, it returns to zero when I stop the car, even with the engine still running, but as soon as the car starts moving the needle returns directly to 55 mph and stays there. All of the other readings are fine, no trouble codes. Lew

When you get in the car and insert the key, if you turn the key to accessory, all of the gauge needles do a full sweep of their range. Does your speedometer do a full sweep to 200 and back to zero when you do this?

Junkman, thanks for your reply to my post. When I turn the key it sweeps to 55 mph, drops back to zero, sweeps to 55 again, then drops to zero and stays. Takes a second or two to sweep twice. I tried it several times, same thing happened every time.

Okay, your next step is to pull your codes (that's actually the first step in diagnosing ANY problem with these cars). There's a sticky at the top of this forum that talks about the check engine light. The instructions are in that thread. Pull your codes and post them here.

Are you 100% sure on that? Have you cleared the codes previously? Usually, there are always some residual codes. Did you try to pull them exactly as the instructions direct?

Junkman, you are correct. I did it wrong the first time, but I think I have the hang of it now. Here are the codes:
40 BCM: B0502H, B0507H, B2482HC, B2578H, B2583H, B2721H, B2723H, U1255H, U1096H, U1016H, U1051H.
A0 LDCM: B2282H, B2286H, B2284H, U1255H, U1264H, U1016H, U1096H.
A1 RDCM: B2283H, B2285H, U1064H
(some of these are duplicates)

That is a lot of codes, but everything seems to be working fine except for the speedometer.

I haven't forgotten. I'm researching the issue. I'm old and slow if women are not involved.

Junkman,
Too many codes. I believe most of them are old, doubt they have been reset in years since no one works on that car but me. I reset them all, going to drive the car to work tomorrow and see what new ones pop up. Hopefully will shorten the list. I will post them late tomorrow evening. Thanks again for your help. Lew

That's fine, but I've been dealing with this long enough to know which ones to ignore and which ones to pay attention to.

I drove 100 miles today, then checked the trouble codes, 3 codes this time: B0502HC, B0507HC, B2482HC. First 2 of those are right and left DRLs, last is backup lamp relay circuit. Looks to me like I am back to square one. Lew
