A thread for those who are also new to the ECM chip swap with the L98's.

Just a few pictures of me removing the ECM to get to my 85's chip.

The ECM is located on the passenger's side, above the kick panel. It has two bolts that need to be removed, getting to them is the only tough part. A bit of muscle is required to pull the ECM down from it's position, just move the wires to the side.

Here is the ECM removed from it's location.
The front protective plate has also been removed exposing the ECM internals and the stock chip.

A close up of the ECM, the stock chip is the one on the bottom.

With the stock chip out, I now needed to remove the chip from it's carrier. You'll need a small needle and a flat screw driver.

Here you see the closest bank of prongs have all been freed by the needle and bent slightly forward with the screwdriver. Patience and a delicate hand are needed here.

The chip is separated from the carrier and now I'm ready to install my new Azzato chip!

surging idle

Dan,

Thanks for the post. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am currently looking into buying a chip for my 85 in order to fix a stalling/surging idle problem on my 85. My mechanic said that the stock chip in the early C4's is the most likely contributor to the stalling/surging idle problem. Does this sound right? So far i've tried everything to correct the problem (i.e. complete tune up, o2 sensor, new hoses) and the problem still persists.

BTW, How does the Azzato chip compare to the Hypertech Street Runner ?

Any help/opinions would be appreciated

Thanks,
I would not rely on a new chip to solve any problems. Hyper chips and the rest are basically just an advanced timing curve, and have no effect on idle. My 86 wandering idle was completely cured by new injectors. What a difference!!!! Just my opinion.

Hello folks!

This is my 1st post. I'm not sure if I'm jumping in at the wrong spot, or the perfect place to start (?).

I purchased an '89 Conv. w/25K miles (still has original tires, w/good tead), & Auto Trans. The prev. owner included an exchange (confirmed) ECM w/the sale. The car exibits typicall power loss, spitting, & stalling behavior. While attempting to remove the old ECM, I find that I CANNOT unplug the connectors (before removing the two bolts on either side) to get the thing out. I've made sure I was depressing the plastic clips as I was trying to pull/wiggle the connectors loose. THEY WON'T BUDGE! Please help. The next stop is a Chevy dealer ($$$$$$)! ....Harrrumph ...Harrrumph.
