Thanks preacher and everyone.

An additional bummer is that my aunt died on Tuesday.

My mom's younger sister. She too grew up with my "uncle" although not as close as my mom was beause they were thae same age.

That makes my mom, her sister, and my aforementioned uncle all died within a year of each other.

The WWII generation is going fast.

My mom was in college when WWII broke out.

She could remember the time, place, and who was with her when the radio came on with the famous "Day of Infamy" announcement December 7th, 1941

She became one of two women on a 300 person top secret biological research program for the Army during WWII

I had two other uncles in WWII

One was UDT (underwater demolition) and the other was a B17 pilot and 44 missions over Germany. He flew the famous FIVE GRAND B17. You can google it if you want.

Anyway it's Memorial Day weekend and thought I would share.

God bless our troops.

KennyGS It's always hard to come to grips when someone you've always admired is now gone. I've lost people who've had a big impact on my life - suddenly the reality that they were gone forever was a bit tough to come to grips with.

Sorry for your loss.

1963SS Sorry for your loss. It's always sad (but inevitable) to have a loved one pass away. He must have been in his 90's and had a full life. Where did he work in Kentucky? A heart guy might have worked at the UK hospital. One of the best places to be if you're in trouble.

My uncle passed...... a real hero

My uncle passed away a few days ago.
A real Hero.
Well he wasn't my real uncle.
He was my mom's cousin.
They grew up together and they lived next door to each other so they were like bother and sister. His mom was my grandma's sister.

Any way he was considered my uncle my whole life.
He served in WWII. Navy midshipman.
After that he went to medical school while still career Navy.
He became a surgeon. Open chest guy.
He served again as a Navy surgeon in the Korean war.
After 20 years in the Navy he was private practice as a world reknown heart surgeon. He was requested to be on the heart surgery team for two presidents.
He lived and retired in Kentucky.
About 4 years ago, while visiting him, I put two and two together and asked him if he was in a MASH unit as a heart surgeon in Korea.
He said yes. I never knew that!
I asked if it was like the TV show MASH and he said that the TV show was very realistic for the operating rooms scenes except "withouth the fun"
There was no fun operating 28 hours straight on our boys.
Anyway, I thought I would share the passing of another from the great generation. They just don't have people like that anymore.
God bless him.
