Corvette engineer says mid-engined version is not being developed


Juechter has announced they aren't developing a mid-engined version.

It was the 80s when rumors about a mid-engined Corvette surfaced, but these never materialized and it seems the situation won't change in the near future. In an interview with Autoline After Hours, Chevrolet Corvette engineer Tadge Juechter was asked about a mid-engined Corvette which supposedly appeared for a brief moment in a TV program, but his response was: "I'll have to check that out, because I know no such car exists."

Juechter did admit they analyzed the prospects of a mid-engined Corvette C7, but refused to go down this road because they say it would have greatly affected everyday driving comfort. We remind you that back in January, Car & Driver published some spy shots allegedly depicting a mid-engined Corvette prototype which is expected to come out in 2017 as the Zora ZR1 and will be sold alongside the current C7.

Since Tadge Juechter denied the existence of such a model, one can speculate that maybe Chevrolet is planning a mid-engined supercar positioned above the Corvette and they are trying to keep it a secret just like Ford did with the new GT.

dobrenyr Put some tiny yet powerfull electic motors up front, DO NOT put in a huge battery, just one that is powerfull enough for a minutes worth of power to the front wheels, use the vettes already "excess" hp to recharge is a quickly as possible and you have instant AWD but more importantly since it is all electric, you can dial it in wit the vette electronics and stability and launch control etc... no front aft diff to speak of and you can back off power to a slipping rear wheel and add powr to a front wheel and you have solved much of the issues.

bettte yet, have the motor just charge the battery and use 4 electric motors. So the gas motor can be optimized to run efficiently at a certain RPM... and best of all you still get a V8 rumble

The current car already has more than half it's weight on it's rear wheels. More rear bias isn't really going to help the car in the area's needed, that's not what they are going for.

What they want to do is get the mass centered between the wheels.

Longtimer This layout with the C7 Launch control would be about as close to rear-mid traction capable as a front mid could get. Even a rear mid can carry more groceries than a Cheatah.

Will watch BLK 1.
It does not matter to me if the C8 is mid engine or not..
Its out of my price reach I am sure.
Mid engine layout requires a real strong differential IRS like Ferrari. & Lambo uses.
Rear tires dont want to spin easy. No fuse in the driveline.
Ferrari uses a Limited slip Posi very similar to original Dana 60 Power Lock used in 1966-71 Mopar Hemi cars. Internet search will show you what I have found too.
Front engine layout still works.
Lower cost likely.

The trans-axle is not necessary. Using C3 isn't a real reference point for performance of a future platform either. C7 already has better weight distribution and performance.

The only advantage a rear mid car will have is the amount of mass that is moved to the center of the car. It should theoretically rotate faster but there are still limits.

A shitbox 4.0 V8 won't make Hellcat HP 840-870 HP.

GM hasn't built Turbo charged production rocket ships in some time.
