Clicking sound, what is it?

2000 Corvette C5 Stock
70k miles
Automatic

Just changed idler pulley

Did you change the AC one as well?? Sounds like the AC belt is slapping around

What condition is the belt in? Also, have you checked the 2 idlers and the AC tensioner? Do you know how to tell if either of them are bad? Did the noise start after you changed the accessory tensioner or was it there before? What made you change the accessory tensioner? Answer all of these questions.

When my dad purchased the car the both belts were changed. The noise was around before we changed the accessory tensioner. Only the accessory tensioner was checked, and I was only aware of 1 other tensioner, where is the third (knowing of the AC/Accessory tensioners)?

We changed the accessory tensioner because we noticed a large amount of movement / bouncing. We were able to stabilize the accessory tensioner and the noise went away, then we changed it because once we let go the noise came back. After changing it we noticed the sound you heard in the video, sort of the same sound before we changed it but not exactly.

There are only two tensioners and two idlers (one set per belt). tensioners are the spring loaded pulleys, the idlers are bolted solid. The A/C tension is right next to the A/C compressor, its a tricky to get to and not easy to see.

If you can easily take tension off the tensioner, its bad. You should have to put a little weight behind it

Also, you need to check the other tensioner and two idlers. The best way to do this is to remove the belts and take the easiest to get to idler off the car. Take it with you to a place that has a replacement. Once there, give it a spin. If it spins, then it is bad. Give the new one a spin so that you can see how much play yours is suppose to have. If any of yours spin significantly more than the new one, then your bearings are bad and that idler/tensioner needs to be replaced.

The AC ones are a lot of fun to do. NOT.

I bet it's the accessory idler. I say that because you probably applied tension to the belt when you grabbed the accessory tensioner and eliminated the play in the belt travel.

Had the same sound on my 02 ZO6 and it was the AC spring in the tensioner. I cut the belt off and it was gone. GM changed the tensioner and a new belt a month later. Take off the AC belt and I bet thats it. BTW my Z had only 8K miles when it failed.

Thanks for all the help guys! I got under the car, and sure enough it was the tensioner for the AC belt. My dad purchased a new one along with the idler pulley from the parts store.

We jacked it up, took the passenger side tire off, and got to work. First I took off the idler pulley, one 15mm bolt. Then I got underneath and unbolted the tensioner, and pulled it through the bottom. The new tensioner was dropped in from the top and I bolted it in. Getting the belt back properly was the hardest part, arms were tired from holding the tensioner up

All fixed! Oh and the old tensioner was so shot I was able to move it with my thumb
