what are yous guys talkin bout??? all i know is 2+2=4, not 3.999999999999... my second grade teacher would kick my little azz if i put such an idiotic answer on paper. id have to stay after school and write on the blackboard "i wont be such an azzhat" 100 times-but id probably only write it 99.999999999999999...times.

this has already been correctly answered...but here's for the doubters:

x = 0.4999... = 0.4 + 0.0999...

multiply through by 10

10x = 4 + 0.999... = 4 + 1 = 5

solve for x

x = 1/2 = 0.5 = 0.4999...

the other is solved in the same way. if there's still doubt, abandon all hope.

0.9 ≠ 0.999...

0.99 ≠ 0.999...

...

0.999...999 ≠ 0.999...

so if you got 99/100 = .99 = 99% on a test does that mean you got 100%? or did you get a 99%?

i just say hell yeah, i got an A

if .999... is equal to 1 then wouldn't

1 be equal to 1.111... and then wouldn't

1.111... be equal to 1.222... and so on until eventually 1 = 100

Here's another way to look at it:

If .9999... was equal to one I could simply subtract .9999... from one and get zero. Let's try it.

1.0000...
-.9999...
________
0.0000...

Now your telling yourself but wayyyy to the right there should be a one and you'd be right if that place existed, but it's past the infininth (is that even a word? ) place, a place that doesn't exist. You can't get beyond infinity no matter what Buzz Lightyear says.
