The way I am reading this is .9...... will continue to increase in size forever drawing closer to the actual number of 1. I see and understand that. How does it make the jump from a never ending shorter distance each time the number increases, to the number 1. I see what you are saying and I read your post.... I still can't get my brain wrapped around the jump to one. And if one is attainable would it be possible for it to 1.1........ and beyond.
The limit of .99... is 1. It'll never get any larger than that.

You clearly didn't think your answer through.

0.3... = 1/3
3 * 0.3... = 0.9...
3 * 1/3 = 1
Therefore 0.9... = 3/3 = 1

You guys have me on top of the fence...... mainly due to your convictions of your answer being correct. I just need a little nudge in understanding how you are getting there in a non mathematical explanation. Plain English.

Plain english?

It's the same number because no number exists between the two of them.

So tell me, how many 9's will it take before .999.... equals 1?

Infinitely many. That's the point.

Here's what I am seeing in my mind

99999..... will go on for ever. At some point 99999...... will be so close to the actual number of one, that it is just accepted by mathematicians as being 1. But in actuality 99999..... will at some point need .....9999991 to actually become one. The number is so infantesimal and beyond our capabilities of counting that they "call it" 1.

That's not how it works.

It's not infinitesimally smaller...it IS 1. There is no number between it and 1 therefore they are the same number.

Waco, the definition of infinity/infinite:

unlimited extent of time, space, or quantity.

Therefore, from your own words, you will have an unlimited quantity of 9's.
so how will .999999999.... ever reach 1 if the 9's are infinite?

You're trying to argue that infinity is finite, which directly contradicts the exact meaning of infinity.

I seem to remember a type of "horn" known to mathematicians with an infinite volume, but a finite surface area.

0.999... is equal to one because...

0.999... = 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ...

we are forever adding a diminishing value to our sum total, and that rate of diminish is more than sufficient for the sum total to converge to a finite value.

what you have to understand is that infinity can bridge that gap. there is no little gap left. infinity brings it all the way home.

No, I'm saying it's infinite.

Wow, just wow.

The problem is that you cannot wrap your head around the concept of infinity.

Think of it this way, .999... is infinitely close to 1. Therefore making it exactly 1.

The ... after the .999 means infinite. To reach one you will have to add one more digit to the already infinite number. Since .999.... never ends there can NOT be the .001... to accompy it since therefore .999... equals one.

Why are these threads always so difficult.

.9... is just another way of writing 1.

.9... isnt CLOSE to 1, it is just another way of writing 1!
