And pretty soon your title will be official desktop background provider of Digital Corvettes

I'm in IT (see, just to piss off bierbelly)

System Administrator, Network Administrator, currently a Linux Administrator for the largest employer in NM until the end of the year. Then who knows?

But I'm really just an IT contractor, and my real job is doing whatever needs to be done. I'm a linux admin and I'm currently working on making Excel talk to Mysql.

(bored yet? I am! I can't wait to get back to building heartbeat servers and load balancers!)

I was also a Network Admin for a credit union for three years and it was the hardest work I ever did! 50+ hour, 6 day weeks were the norm. Blech!

You need to check out my reply to the "Where do you work" thread over on CF, I spend money with your company, not a lot, but some.

So what kind of software do you write?

I'm always curious as to what the free lancers do, as I'm a software engineer myself. I've worked on real time embedded systems for most of my career.

If that was true, it may have been only true in the late '70's through mid-80's.

Our biggest employers are the medical centers, followed by the trucking industry I guess, and tons of manufacturing including military contractors, places like LaBarge, Eagle Picher, F.A.G. Bearings, 150+ restaurants, retail.

However I'm self-employed and happlily so. I could live anywhere in the USA due to the nature of my work (as long as I have high speed interweb), and may move in the future. The cost of living here is really nice though.

Joplin has something like 225,000 population during the daytime. Our actual population is about 60,000 officially, but we draw from all the surrounding communities, most of which are bedroom communities. It's the biggest town for 60+ miles. And there are a lot of big employers not just in Joplin but Springfield (60 miles away, third largest city in Missouri), Tusla (100 miles away), and of course Kansas City (160 miles away).
Don't forget Branson about 100 miles away. I like Joplin.
