Inside A 6L80E

As we were building the 2011 GS we started to get concerned for the transmission. The 6l80e is a very strong unit. But this car already had 80k on the clock and we ramped it up to over 600hp at the wheels and almost as much tq. So as the car was going back together we decided to be pro active about making some very careful changes to his transmission for the sake of it holding up to the abuse for a while. This transmission was a 'clean sheet' design for GM. It was not based off of anything before it. And it comes apart a little differently than some of the earlier stuff. So here is the 6L80e on the bench..



The TCM mounts inside the transmission and bolts to the valve body on this unit. All of it unbolts together as an assembly and can be removed in the same fashion without any worry or concerns for check balls or springs. Even the o-rings are all bonded together to a piece of metal..



And here is the transmission with the valve body removed..

With the valve body off the 6l80e we can move on to unbolt and remove the bell housing. On this transmission the bell housing is the front half of the pump. On the bench are the input shaft of the transmission with the planetary stuff at the base with the sun gear and the 4-5-6 clutchpack. Next to it is the 3-5-reverse drum. And behind that is our front pump that we need to work with..



And here is what's left of the transmission at this point..

I wonder How Hard I can hit till an Epyltic Siezure takes place and He Dies.

Ok so at the bottom of the stator in this picture we can see the spring. This spring is in between the PR valve and boost valve..



The upgrade parts we are installing will ensure good strong line pressure in this transmission and God willing prevent any slippage under all that load. Here is a side by side of old and new boost valves. The upgrade part has a larger orifice and limits the size of the passage to that orifice on the outside of the valve..



The PR valve wears against the casing of the stator which is only aluminum and it wears out. The upgraded part is a redesign that is meant to ride on different areas of the casing that aren't worn..



And here is the exploded view of the valve assembly..



We also need to redirect the flow of fluid around one side of the PR valve. First we beat a check ball into this hole to block the passage..



And then we can carefully drill our new path..



Making damn sure not to leave any metal shavings in that stator assembly..

Reassembly is always reverse the removal with the addition of some precise torque measurements at key places..



Here we are back together and just before going back into the red GS..



Inside the GS..



And here is where we chose to mount a secondary cooler for the transmission..

Well we will overlook all that. I have a question for you. Did you notice there were no bands in that 6l80e? Not a single one.
