Sandhill Cranes

I think that is what these birds are, Sandhill Cranes. These were very tame, I was about 3 or 4 feet from one of them.

wow, sure looks like it. I grew up near Ainsworth, NE which is right up there in the sandhills. Beautiful country. If I recall correctly they were on the endangered species list not too long ago. They draw crowds around North Platte and Grand Island, NE during migration season. Wonder what it was doing all the way down there?

There's several subspecies of Sandhill Cranes-there's a Mississippi Sandhill and a Florida Sandhill, amongst others. The Mississippi Sandhill is one of the most endangered species on the planet, with only about 100-150 left.

Those are beautiful pictures, thanks for sharing.

I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people...I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

They are Sandhill Cranes. Awsome birds, and they aren't scared of much. We have some that stay in our neighborhood pretty much year around. They can also make some racket early in the morning.

Here's a few shots I've captured of a couple in our yard.

Hi;

We are in FL and these birds are all over the place. They will eat right out of your hand, but one of them saw his reflection in may car and started beaking my car until I shooed him away.

They move slow and are alwys in a pair.

If I remember correctly this is because they mate for life. I witnessed them on a trip to FL a few years ago and was really intrigued by them. Did tons of research but that's been 3 or 4 years ago so I've forgotten a little.

Those are some very beautiful birds though. I love them.

Yup, Florida Sandhills you've got there. They do mate for life. Its really cool to see them walking around with their young. If you feed them cracked corn...or whatever...they'll keep coming back to your yard, year after year...kinda cool until they do that prehistoric squwak at 6:30 in the morning.

Great pictures!

I was hiking through the woods once and a sandhill crane started chasing me.

They are pretty big birds.

Now I just need to upgrade to the D300. It seems to take a lot better photos.
