Fatal accident closes I-10 in both directions at Michoud Blvd.
A fatal multi-vehicle accident has closed Interstate 10 in both directions at Michoud Boulevard in eastern New Orleans. Two men in separate pickup trucks died, the Orleans Parish coroner's office said.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted to U.S. Highway 90 at the I-510 exit. Westbound traffic is being diverted to U.S. Highway 11 and then to U.S. Highway 90. There are backups of at least a mile in both directions.
The accident, which involved more than 40 vehicles, happened about 4:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes between exits 246 and 248, New Orleans police said.
In addition to the fatalities, 22 people were taken to the hospital with minor to critical injuries, said officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman. Thirty-seven other people with minor injuries refused treatment on the scene, he said.
One firefighter was treated and released from the hospital after he was cut on the face while extricating a person from a vehicle, Flot said.
The cause of the pileup remains under investigation.
Police could not say when the interstate is expected to reopen.
