Manufacture dates inside helmets..How long can they be used? I bought a sweet Simpson open face helmet today...I plan on painting it to match the Faks Sport...The date is 08/00...Can it be used at a track or did I waste my $20.00? Yeah I know I robbed it...worst case I will just put it with my trophys!

The date depends on whether it has been dropped or not. From what I've read on motorcycle sites te recommended is 3-5 years less if it has been dropped a bunch or worse if it has been "involved".

Depends on the sanctioning body, NCCC will use up to 10yrs I think.

3 years, 5 years, 10 years. I guess thst means that my helmet fron the 60's isn't any good even if it still has the SCCA sticker one?

RACING...Because with baseball, football, basketball, tennis, and golf, you only need one ball

I used to think that I had learned patience as I got older. Then I realized that I just didn't give a shit

The foam has a tendency to dry or harden over time. Hard foam is not good for your head. Thus depending on the sanctioning body they keep moving the year forward or limit the age of the helmet so that the helmet/foam can do its job.

It's your head inside. What's it worth to you or your family?

Have fun and stay out of the gravel.

Helmet regs for SCCA Solo II.

Safety Helmet: If you bring your own safety helmet, it must be approved by Snell in the current or two most recent ratings (e.g. if Snell 95 is in production then that, 90 and 85 are legal).

It depends on what you are planning on doing... auto cross, track days, wheel-to-wheel racing? They all may have different requirements. You are fine until the end of 2006 (IIRC) for SCCA Club racing. At that time SA95 helmets will no longer be allowed. You will need a SA2000 minimum rating then. SOLO rules are different and allow SA95 helmets until the SA2010 rating helmets are available (probably in 2011 sometime).
