Car & Driver test of the 08

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course they picked the bow tie as #1-
0-60 viper 3.5 vette 3.7
0-100 Viper 7.6 Vette 7.7
0-150 Viper 17 Vette 17.5
Top Speed Viper 202 Vette 198

Car and Driver is the first to release a heads up battle between the new 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 and the current Chevrolet Corvette Z06. For the straight-line drag racers it’s a close call with the Viper pulling 0-60 in 3.5 seconds running through the 1/4 mile barrier in 11.6 seconds at 126 MPH. The Z06 did 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and pulled 11.7 @ 125 MPH in the 1/4 mile. While the Viper did win, we would have expected some higher trap speeds from the milestone breaking 600HP V10 Viper. Without knowing the exact test conditions we think quicker and faster times are sure to come from the the actual buyers when they start hitting the drag strips across the country with these monsters.

Not forgetting about the “twisties” (the unofficial Bimmer crowd mantra) the Viper outdid the Z06 around a 2 mile road course by 1 second. Even with the Viper winning the tests Car and Driver still choose the Corvette Z06 as the overall winner. With the prices of these two cars slowly converging to about $7,000 of each-other it makes for some interesting decisions for the buyers in this market.

We know the Z06 is very “mod” friendly with more horsepower and torque readily available with very simple bolt-ons and tuning. Will the Viper be the same? Will we be seeing 700HP Vipers with simple modifications? We’re looking forward to seeing how much power the new Viper is really putting down to the wheels as well as some real world drag strip times, so send in those dyno results and timeslips!
What are those guys smoking? The price difference, with way less equipment on the Viper, is $14K (MSRP).

Anyone know the final word on the GMPP Hot Cams & Warranty? If GM installs the GM replacement cam shaft, will the warranty be retained?

I guess it comes down to this: A stupid-fast daily driver, or a balls-out adrenaline rush.

Me, I'll take the Viper.

These are both great cars.

No loser in the bunch..

I hope my posting the information didn't ruin anyones day.

Its all good and you can take the information fwiw..

Like I said...both great cars.

Car and driver voted the z the winner..

That said...the Viper this year in this test was half a second faster around the track..

If I took a guess I'd say dump the runflats on the Z06 and put some lighter stickier tires like the viper did and the numbers the vette put out might be superior..

One year the vipers faster, the next year the z06 is faster..

We all as consumers win.

The link is a review in the local paper today. I think it was realistic, but laughted at his description of the earlier Vipers. I almost bought a used one but realized the C5 Z was a bargain at the time.

"Viper was introduced as a 1992 model, with an 8.0-liter V-10 engine with 400 horsepower. It was a Hail Mary pass by a failing company that had little to lose, much to gain from marketing the baddest car ever.

And it was bad, in multiple senses. Developed for a bargain-basement $70 million, the earliest Vipers were screwed together with two separate missions in mind: First, get it done quickly and inexpensively, and second, get it done right. In that order. It was one of the cobbiest, roughest-edged cars in modern history: no air conditioning, cruise control or antilock brakes. There was a heater, but it wasn't needed, as the engine and exhaust were so poorly insulated from the cockpit that you were never less than warm, more often baking like a muffin. It may have been possible to design a worse-fitting, clumsier-to-install cloth top, but I doubt it. It had plastic side screens instead of windows that flapped and scratched and within weeks, they were impossible to see out of.

And Dodge sold every one of them at or above the $50,000-or-so list price."

They don't sell well? They sell every one they produce. They just don't produce 35,000 a year like GM does.

So is 600 HP from a "fancied up" truck motor different than 600 HP from a "fancied up" car motor?
