Since I live in the middle of a hurricane-prone area, a netbook is awesome to be able to pick up, throw in the car, and go. It lets me stay in contact with family, check my email, keep up with the local news, all the things someone who has to evacuate needs to be able to do. Plus with a $30 USB tuner, it makes a great "hurricane TV." Plus it is small enough to be useful as a GPS in the car. All in all, I use it far more than I ever used my laptop.

The funny thing is, I have an old IBM laptop-a Thinkpad 365X-it has a 10.4" screen, a Pentium 133, 8 megs of RAM, weighs probably 5-6 pounds, and had relatively little battery life compared to today's netbook. Back then, a 10" screen on a laptop was huge. Now, someone looks at a 10" screen on a netbook and goes "wow, that's tiny." It's just that most people have fallen into the "bigger and faster is better" hype that sells computers these days. Most people never do anything that even comes close to pushing their system. For 99% of consumers, a netbook is powerful enough to do everything they ever need. That's why we are starting to see Intel Atom based computers popping up for sale. Granted, they come with a bigger than 10" screen, and a full-sized keyboard.

People amaze me. I talk to people all the time who tell me they need a new computer. So I ask what they plan on using it for, and the answer is usually surfing the internet, email, maybe some Word or Quickbooks, nothing serious. So I'll say OK, I can build you one for about $400. Then I'll see them again in a couple of weeks, ask about the computer, and they'll tell me they went to BestBuy and bought one for $1200 because that's what the salesman said they needed.

Then you say..."Well, what kinda work, what applications will you be using, so we know how powerfull a machine you need"
Then they have this blank stare and pause and finally just say..."big ones...."

How much RAM does the laptop have, and how much junk does he have running? Easiest way to find out how much RAM the laptop has is to click on Start, then Computer, and then when that opens, right click anywhere in that window that's not on one of your drive icons, and then click on Properties. It will open a window that looks like this:
You're looking for where it says "Installed Memory (RAM)"
The easiest way to find out how much junk he has running is to ctrl-alt-del, choose Start Task Manager, then when that opens, click on the Processes tab and look at the bottom, see how many processes he has running and what the Physical Memory % says.
It could be several things-too much junk running and not enough RAM, virus/spyware (no one program finds it all), or a problem with the hardware itself. Start with how much RAM it has and how much junk is running and we'll see where it goes from there.

Yeah, that's just about as much as you can get in a 32-bit operating system. You can put in 4GB, but you won't get to use it all anyway, so OEM's like Dell put in 3GB instead.
How much junk is running, and how much RAM is it using?
