spark plug supports

I am in the process of replacing all of the missing spark plug wire shielding. Going to get the car running and then I am planning on removing the intake manifold for painting and resealing. Not sure if the upper grommet bracket is bolted to the correct bolt on the intake manifold. It appears that the supports go on the last bolt on the intake but it is hard to make out in the AIM illustrations. The brackets got mixed up when I painted them. Does this look correct? Do the brackets go on the rear bolt of the intake or do they go on the next one in from the end. Does the grommet go towards the back with the threads on the bracket towards the front?

They do not go on the heads as you have shown in your attached pic. They are mounted on the bell housing at the rear of the engine on either side, see the "supports" in the diagram below:

Those are the lower supports that are shown in the diagram. I have the lower supports bolted in place on the bell housing area. The upper supports bolt to the intake manifold but my car did not have them in place when I got it. Trying to find the correct placement but a search online shows several different bolts used on different model years.

My 1970 had the chrome distributor cover. I know by 1978 the HEI was being used as a distributor and the chrome cover dispensed. So somewhere in between it was discontinued. I am not sure when.

If your car had the chrome cover, you could fit that over the distributor with brackets attached and see where it lines up. It's a pretty close fit so where the mounting brackets bolt up should be readily apparent.

If not, I don't know for sure. It's possible that they were staggered, the rear bolt on the drivers side and the second bolt on the passenger side. This configuration puts them approximately straight across from each other.

I have the chrome cover and I tried to line it up. Looks like it is close but I won't know for sure until I get the distributor back in the car. The brackets also probably have to be tweaked a little to get it just right.
