I am ready for my stock 86 to grow a bigger pair, if you had $2000, what would you do to start out? I intend to keep it as my DD as well..

I was thinking of new IntakeMani/Runners, QTP cutouts, shorty or mid headers (who makes them for 86, live in Cali) and new CAI.

How good is base engine? ( miles / cond )
Does it need work ( rebuild ?)

QTP cutouts, shorty or mid headers .
Waste of $$$
Already have shorties from the factory
Long tube headers on a L98 or don't bother

Cutouts are for wa*kers who want their car to sound like a tractor ( not withstanding very little room to fit them on a C4 )
If you had full length headers and a tuned length collector then you could justify cutouts for track work
Installing them so you can make a noise driving through KFC is a waste

Base engine as 98k miles. Does not burn/leak oil/coolant. It has the iron heads according to the RPO. surprised to see it had the G44 3.07 rear end in it so that made me happy.

hmm, know of any under table smogs in ca for the longtubes? I guess i wouldn't need cutouts unless i was making serious power..in that case i would probably go with the borla stinger or corsa cat backs.

Actually I could always install the stock exhaust setup when its time to smog and just switch the parts out after and so on.

Not sure if they have CARB numbers but long tube headers available with same as stock AIR pipes
on them so they would function like stock exhaust

But wouldn't it fail visual?

I would LOVE to slap some longtubes on there, and I will probably do so! I will go ceramic coated, I once used pacesetter painted longtubes on my 97z28, and they looked horrible after a while, not to mention the extra heat they gave off.

Just looking for bolt ons now, I'm looking into buying a separate block to start a build, do not know where I want to start yet though. Either l98/LTx/LSx :huh:

$2000 to spend, what would you do?
I would run. Honestly.

I'm having a light tune-up on mine and now brands like "Callies", "Wiseco", "First Injection" etc. seem to have taken over the garage. And the theoretical budget has already tripled. :thud:

I don't know why that was just so damn funny to me. :rolling: Probably because that all I see them used for in my area.

if you really want to keep tabs on engine condition, regular oil changes, having a magnet like this on the base of your oil filter and using a cutting tool designed to allow inspection of your oil filters after every oil change will provide you with a great deal of information and potentially prevent or at least alert you to potential minor problems, long before they become expensive major problems

Do what i did, new heads, cam, roller rockers and a holley stealth ram. Should be able to get all that for 2k
I don't think so. Intake manifold alone is $700. Include the hood scoop, new distributor and the fuel rails and injectors and it will be over $1000. Not likely you will get good heads for under $1000.

Grumpys got the right track, L98s respond great to heads/cam, lots of good info on combos using the search feature or in the C4 Sticky. If your long term goals include putting a more stout short block under these components at some point, you can leave yourself some room to grow with the heads/cam.

True but for an L98, won't you need a better intake since it runs out of breath at 4500-5000 or so?

That's a great start, but if it was me I'd just spend the 2 grand at Hooters.
Or spend 4 grand on a set of hooters for the wife or GF and have much fun. :rolling:

Woah thanks for all of the replies, hey grumpy on those brodix heads, will the straight plug work? or do I need angle plugs?

This is how close the boot is to Melrose header primary with my straight plug iron heads. Because of this I decided to go with L98 angled heads.
