3.07 Rear Axle Ratio

OK, I have an automatic in my '94' and G44 3.07 gears. I will be moving to Germany in November and that means autobahn driving. So, does anyone have suggestions for a better gear ratio that will optimise horsepower/torque in acceleration and maintaining speed, between 90-120 MPH range, with the lowest RPM? I have been searching the internet with little success. I understand quarter mile racers like 3.73 gears, but is that good for sustained speed?
Also, I am curious why there were several gear ratios available on the C4. GM must have made these different gear ratios for a reason. What is the purpose behind 3.07 gears, highway driving, city driving, etc? I certainly would appreciate education on this matter.

I wouldn't even consider changing them. I think they'll be fine.
The only other factory option was 2.59's but I wouldn't do that. I think the 3.07's are a great choice for your application and you won't be killing your around town fun by installing to tall a gear.
:agree:

Stay w/ the 3.07. It has enough pep to be fun at speed and not go crazy w/ rpm's. I had the 3.54's and IMHO the rpm's would be borderline for sustained speeds above 100mph. I was able to do 165mph @ 5400 rpm's. w/ maybe a few hundred more rpm's to go. I can't remember the other speed/rpm's b/c I was in so many different driving situations that I didn't pay much attention to that but the top speed one I remember b/c I only did that once.

:agree: The 2.59 gears with keep your RPMs down at the speeds you mention but it's not worth the swap. You will lose the "press in the seat" feel when you punch the throttle.
OK, thanks to all you guys for helping me come to a decision. I'll keep the original gearing. Thanks, again.
hi all..is the 3.07 is the stock on the LT1 94' vettes ??? cos i dont know whats on mine..!! any1??

Look for your service parts label. The most common locations for that would be under the armrest lid or under one of the storage bin lids. Check to see if one of these 3 digit codes is on it:

G44 : 3.07 RATIO
GH0 : 3.54 RATIO
GH3 : 2.77 RATIO
GH4 : 2.92 RATIO
GM1 : 2.59 RATIO
GM3 : 3.45 RATIO
GM8 : 2.56 RATIO
GT7 : 3.33 RATIO
GU2 : 2.73 RATIO
GU4 : 3.08 RATIO
GU5 : 3.23 RATIO
GU6 : 3.42 RATIO
GV4 : 3.36 RATIO
GV8 : 2.72 RATIO
GW4 : 3.31 RATIO
GW6 : 3.27 RATIO
GW9 : 2.93 RATIO

There were two options for gears on auto cars. The stick cars got 3.54's I believe. Check your rpo codes for gear ratio.

I you have a manual trans the 3.07 is stock. The auto trans I believe had the 2.59 rear as stock.
thx bros for the info..very usefull

so while we r at it,,,if i have the 2.95 which to intall if i want more power performance.. ???

thx
If you have the 2.59, anywhere between a 3.07 and 3.54 should do but you have to ask yourself how high in the rpm's are you willing to go. It's been a long time since I researched but I don't know how easy it's going to be to get the in between gears. I'm sure someone sells them. When I installed the 3.54 from 2.59 I was burning the tires up. I should have bought stock in a tire company. I had to relearn my launches b/c at WOT w/ the 2.59 I could barely break the tires loose. It was the absolute opposite w/ the 3.54.

That's only true for the 4+3 cars. Later 6 speed cars used lower gearing. Automatics, most if not all years, had a 2.59 standard for coupes and a 2.73 standard for convertibles. 3.07 was optional for both.
