I thought Bubba had cut a piece out of the bottom of my rad shroud but it would appear it is supposed to have a trap door in it. Probably fallen off or something.

What was the purpose of the trap door? Is it anything to do with the auxilliary electric cooling fan at all?

The 80 L-82s with AC also have the auxilary fan and the trap door shroud. 81-82s have the auxiliary fan, but do not have the trap door.

Not sure why GM felt the trap door was needed.

Check the assembly instruction manual (AIM), probably under the L-82 options section. If the auxilary electric fan was used in 79, the AIM will show it.

...Should the electric fan and trap door be in front of the radiator?...
Behind the radiator; not in front. AC condensor is out front.

Engine fan would sit right behind.

This side would fit against the radiator.

You can find the fans and brackets on eBay.

1980 shown; 79 will be similar.

Thanks Mike...

OK, so I havent got the fan in place but what I thought was the cut out bit for the trap door looks simply to be a rectangular 'cut out' on the bottom of the shroud as yours also shows. The trap door is to the front, so I may have that...I need to look again.
