Hello, 84 corvette column shaft has slop and I need help. Took the column down to where the ignition cylinder is but can't see how to proceed. The shaft joint seems tight, it feels like the lower beerings, but how do I get to them? Any help/warnings or diagrams would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you
Don

Very possible that the lower bearing has failed but more often than that is the four screws that hold the tilt knuckle in place is the culprit. The usually just loosten up a bit, just enough to have some slop in the column. You need to get deeper into the column, its a major pain in the rear.

Steering column diagram?

Any idea where I can get a diagram of the assemble of the column?
I really don't see screws or bolts left to remove.
I do see a pin.
I'm at the point where it pivots.
I will take the column out tonight and start looking at it closer.
Thank you

You still need to go a little deeper. There are two pins just below the point where the column tilts. One on the left side one on the right. Those pins hold the portion that tilts to its bracket and that bracket is what comes loose. Once you remove the tilt portion from the bracket (by removing those pins which you need a special tool for) you will see the bolts I am talking about. I did a little searching on the web for a column diagram and didn't have any luck. You might spend a little more time than I did and find somthing. Maybe pick up the GM service manual from the dealer to find a diagram. There is alot to totally disassembling a GM column. Keep digging and you will get t here, just remember where all the parts go for reassembly.:buhbye:

Thank you SO VERY MUCH....
I actually just bought a replacement from ebay but I plan to continue the breakdown. If I fix it I will put that one on ebay to recoup the other one.
Looks like I need the pivot pin remover to go further into the column
Thank you again
