Will I get any horsepower gain from getting rid of the stock single snorkel air filter housing setup on my 78 L48, and using an air filter housing that's open all the way around? If I go that route, do I block off the hoses from the valve covers? Why didn't Chevy use the dual snorkel of the L82 on both engines, or just the open housing?

You might get 5 hp with an open element air clearner. Chevy stopped using them due to state and federal vehicle noise laws.

Thanks for the quick reply! I've got flow through mufflers so a little more noise won't be noticed. How about the EGR lines or whatever they are that go into the air cleaner housing? Can I just cap them off at the valve covers? Do they perform any function other than emissions control?

PCV and distributor advance you will want to keep. The others can be removed. The AIM shows what most of these are and how they connect. Doesn't hurt to know what you're disconnecting when the time cmes.
