Bus Driver Who Picked Up Hunter Reinstated
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ULYSSES, Ky. (AP) -- A school bus driver is back on the job after letting a hunter ride shotgun.

Kathy Laney was suspended indefinitely in September by the rural Lawrence County school district -- and could have been fired -- after she stopped along her route with 10 youngsters aboard and gave a lift to a squirrel hunter carrying a 20-gauge shotgun.

Parents were outraged over her suspension and swamped the central office with calls and petitions demanding she be allowed back.

Administrators let her return to her route after suspending her for 30 days and requiring her to go through additional training. She has been back on the job for two weeks.

``She's an excellent employee,'' said John Thompson, the school district's transportation director. ``We didn't want to lose her.''

Parents plastered her bus with signs and banners welcoming her back.

Administrators concluded Laney drove Ralph Music only a matter of yards to get him past some threatening dogs. Laney said she recognized Music and was certain he would not harm the youngsters, who included her own children and the hunter's grandson.

``I know I made a mistake,'' Laney said. ``I didn't realize he had a gun. I knew he was holding something. I thought it was a cane.''

Thompson said Laney had an unblemished record in her six years as a bus driver.

``And parents love her,'' he said.

What about all the hunters who drive around this time of year with shotguns hanging in their pick-up truck rear window gun racks? Should school bureaucrats ban school buses from the highways until hunting season is over? Or will they ban hunting and let an over-population of deer cause the school buses the wreck and injure their children?

The message here is clear: Be a good samaritan and risk losing your job! Jeeez, we're surrounded by morons!

This nation is going to self-destruct under the weight of its own paranoia!

Excellent! Then the hunter can just shoot the threatening dogs. That works!

We're talking rural Kentucky, here!

:agree:

And what should the policy say about rendering aid/assistance to people you know who might be injured???

How about a bus driver opening its door to save a flood victim from drowning?? Is that O.K.????

I think the point of this thread is you can't rely on rules/regulation to cover every contingency. At some point people actually need to think.

Thinking for yourself, seems to be unheard of these days. But for our generation (mine and SilverBear's), it was high on the "what you have to teach your kids" list. Right behind honesty and integrity.

This is what I hate about liberals and whiners. They demand rules be put in place about crap like this and punish people simply being nice. They want rules in place so that people have to treat each other like a criminal or threat, have to go through certain channels, and basically, treat them like an object rather than a person. Get back to people and elminate half the crap they have in place. If you see someone on the road and know them, pick'em up! Let's not lose our human side.
