I prefer Edellbrocks, but, the Demon line is very similar to the Holley with a few good exceptions. The airhorns are nicely contured for flow, and the general construction is up to date and clean, unlike the messy Holleys. More nice features are the option to use anular boosters instead of down leg, and you can also change out the air bleeds. They're pricey, but if the dual bowl carbs are your bag, they're better than a same sized Holley.
Barry Grant's are very nice, but unless your pushing 400+hp and looking to cut off a 10th of a sec. I would just buy a reg. holley.
As for the edelbrocks go! Right now I'm not to happy with them, last week I bought two 750s and these carbs are so far off the mark it's not funny! I just had to order another $75. worth of mettering rod's & jet's to try to get them dialed in, Holley would be a quick jet change (if anything) and off you go. I'm not trashing these carb's yet they may work out great, but from the factory with 113 pri. jets 107 secondary just seem's like they did'nt put a lot of thought in to them.
As a mater of fact when I called them last week they said they do that so they can't be held liable for burnt pistons that's why they give you the rejet inst. (that was a quote) well nobody's going to burn a piston with that setup thats for sure!
I'll let you know how I make out when there done, I hope they work out well but they could spend more time on R&D.
He has a good reputation for putting a carb together right. I use holleys exclusively but spend about a day per car reworking them to get them right. Right out of the box I find that a holley doesn't work too well. Especially the double pumpers. They are too rich in the idle and light cruise and jetting doesn't help this range.
The Barry Grand carbs are worked in this area. The demons right out of the box are also hit and miss but they do have adjustable air bleeds .
Straight out of the box holleys and demons are not always very good. While I don't have any first hand experience with Barry Grant I have heard good things about them, Nothing bad.
I agree 100% but with the holley at least it run's good enough to get a base line (I'm not talking about Barry's carbs) these Edelbrock's are so rich it's not funny. the carb's are webber and the improvements they made I like. There base line is so far off when I started the eng's. (355 cid. trickflows, 9.7:1 open exhaust) the black carbon that came out the back was unreal, then I run them in, (liked the throtle responce to 3000 very good) hit the throtles looking for 5000, fouled the plug's @ 3500 I have never had such a mismatch before. Like I said though I'm hopeing for the best if I can dial them in in a couple hours and they work like I hope they will ,then I'll be happy and know what to expect the next time, if not then I'll never buy them again and stick to holley.
The first thing to do with a holley is drill at least .100 holes in the throttle plates on any plate that has an idle circuit plus put .015 wire in the idle circuit. This just gets to close to the correct leanness. Jetting doesn't help the lower circuit. I have also in extreme cases plugged part of the transfer passages.
wait a moment guys. Before you start making rod and jet changes on the Edelbrocks do two things.
1- make sure the floats are set to spec.
2-If your fuel pressure is greater than 6 lbs at idle, you will flood through the needles. Set the pressure to 5 1/2 lbs.
If you need to drill air holes in the throtle blades, then you must be running a pretty lumpy cam. If your vacuum is 12 inches or higher, there's a misadjustment someplace. I'd look for that before drilling the plates.
I like BG carbs, but i had a SPeed Demon 850 DP, mech secs, annulars ...and i couldnt get it lean enough. I think the SPeedDemon line is more for the strip. RoadDemon line is what you want for a street car.
I am now running an Edelbrock 800 carb and this car is wonderful . ALmost perfect out of the box...just had to change to silver springs to accomodate my 10.5" vaccuum . I even took the manual choke off of it , and it purrs at 700 rpm cold idle (without dying) and 900 warm idle. The carb is well thought out and is a nice match to my motor. The EDL Techs are first class too.
The Edelbrock Carb is much easier to tune than Holley or Demons ; to make a jet change on them you have to remove the bowls which means spilling gas all over the place. Do that a few times, and youre ready for new Bowl gaskets.
With Edelbrocks carbs , most of the time you only need to change the metering rods (which is literally a 5 minute or less job) ; even if you have to make a jet change, you wont loose any gasoline because the gas is below the gasket. The gasket lasts a super long time as well.
With each Edelbrock carb, you get thier manual with clear charts on what to do to tune the carb to your application. Its easy. You may need additional parts in which case you just buy the Carb Tune Kit with an assortment of jets/rods/springs in it.
Lastly, dont try tuning a carb if youre not in the mood, just had a fight with the g/f, or had a bad day at work. Wait till your calm and optimistic.
Ill buy those carbs from you if you want to get rid of them.
