You guys will have to forgive me for my ignorance. I'm a newbie when it comes to le mans. Can someone tell me what the difference is between P1, P2, GT1, and GT2? Do they compete against everyone, or only the vehicles in their class??

ya sure

I have been following le mans for years as well as ALMS

There are 2 series. One in europe and one here in the US.
The us race series is called American Le Man Series and the one in Europe is called Le Man Series.

Now to the cars.
If you need a better definition then what I give you go to

www.americanlemans.com

go to le mans 101 on the top left and click on classes of cars. or

http://americanlemans.com/assets/pdfs/classesofcompetition.pdf

here is a quick over view

p1: a little heavy big engines
p2: light small engines

gt1: usually bigger power no less then 2,480 lbs, and 6-650 hp, 2 wheel drive
gt2: less power, 4-450, same weight, slower, and I think can be 4 wheel drive

To give you an idea the P1 and P2 class are the sports racer cars of the old days, these vehicles are also known as prototypes. They are not based on any production vehicle but built from the ground up race cars. The P1 class is the big daddy at Le Mans, they are around 2,000 pounds and 600-700BHP. The P2 class was made more for private teams meaning they are cheaper to run in this class. They are lighter and less powerful then the P1 cars, at twisty tracks P2 cars can actually beat P1 cars but at higher speed tracks the P2 cars get dusted.

As mentioned GT1 and GT2 cars are based on production cars, Gt1's are 2,400-2,500 and sometimes as much as 2,600 pounds packing 600+ BHP while GT2 cars are around 2,400 pounds and 450BHP, GT2 class is more for private teams while GT1 takes a good amount of money to compete.

There have only been two teams to beat the Corvette racing team at Le Mans. Pro Drive (Pro drive Ferrari with 550/575) and Oreca (with Vipers) have beaten the Corvette team at Le Mans. However people have to understand Corvette racings typical plan at Le Mans, they dont really try to Qualify in a good spot but they focus on setting the car up the way its going to run the race. The C5R during the race has a best lap time in the 3:49.--- range and in the first test/practice session this year for Le Mans one of the C6Rs ran a 3:49.8--. Being so early on dont be shocked if the C6Rs are pulling off 3:48 maybe even 3:47 lap times. This year which will be the hardest ever for the team it seems that they are probably better prepared for this race then they ever have been.

Would be awesome if we got a Corvette 1-2-3-4-5 lol or hell while I am at it a overall win.

To sum it up, Corvette Racing will most likely win their class but finish above 13th place overall.
I wouldnt say most likely, Corvette racing has lost to Oreca the only time they raced them at Le Mans.......

And Pro Drive beat Corvette racing as well, I think that Corvette racing is well prepared for this race but I cant say that they will most likely win. You have two other teams which are perfectly capable of winning the race.

Where I think the C6R has both of them beat is we know the C6R can go full speed for the entire 24 hour race (they have done it before) however the Oreca Saleen S7R will be making their first trip to the Le Mans 24 hour race and will probably be the first time they have to run full tilt. The Pro drive team seem to be able to make it to 23 hours just fine but by then they are pretty worn out.

Update

The #63 is down 1 lap and in 3rd place in GT1. The #64 is out after 2.5hrs for drive shaft failure.

Aston are 1,2, 4 and 5 in GT1. I hope they breakdown or make a mistake.

Congratulations to the Corvette team for another VERY respectable performance. Their record over the last 7 or 8 years (?) has been extremely remarkable and although we've become a bit spoiled - expecting a 1-2 Le Mans finish every year, a second place finish against the Le Mans level of competion is nothing to hang your head about. We'll get 'em nest year!!!

not spoiled

Ya we may expect 1,2 finishes but it is not becuase we are spoiled. Look at our competitors. Finicky V12 who don't usually last on the track or the street.

Well the for the record a second place with 6 or so astons trying to bring us down is amazing.

Congratulations CORVETTE RACING for another great finish. :partyon:

Ok lets place bets that aston martin will be there next year, :rolling:
