Ten thousand sign petition for rightwing talkshow host to be removed amid accusations that he has whipped up hatred in the wake of the Arizona shooting

A protest was staged against rightwing talkshow host Glenn Beck today, calling for his immediate removal from Fox News.

The organisers, Jewish Funds for Justice (JFSJ), a charity that campaigns for social change, delivered a petition with 10,000 signatures.

In the wake of the Tucson shooting, the TV and radio personality has had to defend his record against accusations that he has whipped up hatred within the public discourse.

For a media figure who has been variously lambasted as a liar, buffoon, clown, bigot and racist Beck is no stranger to the vitriol that currently passes in America as public debate. In fact, he's built a multimillion dollar empire out of it.

So the protest rally that was staged outside the News Corporation headquarters in New York today probably troubled him as much as water flowing off a duck's back.

The petition was part of a groundswell of opinion that when it comes to Beck, arguably the most extreme of America's multitude of rightwing talk hosts, enough is now enough.

Amid the billowing criticism, Beck has defended himself by claiming he has "softened" the tone of his monologues over the past couple of years. "Nobody wants to recognise this. Why? Because it hurts their dialogue."

But the evidence belies his claim of moderation. The JFSJ accompanied the petition with a list of 10 of Beck's most egregious comments in 2010 (see below).

They include Beck's radio comment on the financier and philanthropist, George Soros, that "here's a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps". The remark was made in reference to Soros as a 13-year-old teenager in Hungary, who survived the Holocaust because his father hid their Jewish identity through elaborate forged documents.

The comment was made as part of a three-part Beck "exposé" of Soros on Fox News last November called the "Puppet Master". Beck's portrayal of Soros was so mendacious and malicious that he was accused by the New Yorker of broadcasting tropes that corresponded "uncannily to those of classical antisemitism". The Daily Beast noted that "nothing like it has ever been on American television before".

Simon Greer, JFSJ's president, said that following last Saturday's Tucson shootings, in which a Congresswoman was shot and six people died, it was time for action. "We are not accusing Glenn Beck or Roger Ailes or Rupert Murdoch of pulling the trigger in Tucson, only one man did that. But we are accusing them of playing to the worst in all of us."

He said that over the past 18 months Beck had referred to Hitler and Nazi Germany more than 400 times in his show.

There is no love lost between Soros and the Fox News stable. A month after the Puppet Master was aired, Soros hit back that the combination of Fox News, Beck and the Tea Party movement was a threat to America that might lead "this open society to be on the verge of some dictatorial democracy".

The billionaire has donated $1m to the liberal media research body, Media Matters. The organisation's founder, David Brock, this week wrote to Murdoch calling on him to do something about Beck and Sarah Palin, who also appears on Fox News.

"In the wake of the [Arizona] killings, your network must make a stand," Brock wrote. "You have the power to order them to stop using violent rhetoric. If they fail to do so, it is incumbent on you to fire them or be responsible for the climate they create."

How absurd, Glenn talks about non-violence all the time. But you would have to actually watch his show to know that.

I would sign a petetion that he is one of the most annoying people on TV but he is popular so everyone does not share my opinion.

I am an O'reily fan but Beck is a clown IMO.

Read the whole article. At the bottom it references Soros. I posted the day after the left wing rhetoric started on blaming conservatives to 'follow the money'. It leads right to Soros. why do you think that happened?

The jealous rage of the liberals is a joy to behold. They cannot compete with conservatives when real issues and ideas are discussed, so they must attempt to silence all conservative thought by censorship and/or legislation. They have already discovered through the ratings (and lately, election results) that the vast majority of Americans reject them and their philosophy. While they try to convince Americans to "move to the middle", by which they mean agree with their failed policies, the reality is that the true "middle" is significantly to the right of where they would have you believe.

I'm not a huge Glenn Beck fan, and never have been - but as usual, the most vocal opponents of his show have either (A) never listened to it. or (B) decided that whatever the mainstream media chooses to tell them to think is sufficient.

If you don't like it, DON'T LISTEN. But don't condemn it as "hate speech" because it doesn't agree with the script you've been given. Have a valid opposing viewpoint? Get your own show. Good luck with the ratings, though - liberal talk radio in particular has always been, and always will be, a dismal failure. People aren't buying what you're selling and you liberals just don't understand why. It's really pretty simple.

You're wrong.

Yeah, it really is just that uncomplicated. Glenn has been a huge proponent of strong family values and conservative political policies. You can disagree with either of those if you like, but you'll be wrong. Go back to listening to the talking heads on the network nightly news as they smirk and spin their way to presenting the liberal agenda while denigrating and ridiculing everything and anything that the majority of Americans continue to show they believe in. And then these geniuses cannot understand why their ratings continue to plummet.

Yes, it really is a joy to watch as they all self-destruct. I wish them continued momentum towards their inevitable demise.

This is nothing but an attempt by the left to limit opposition speech. Beck is no more radical than the left. What he IS is more popular and effective than progressivism, so they must discredit him and his supporters by spinning the truth. And if they can't they'll look for some way to silence them.

:agree: If you don't like the dude--don't watch him. But at the same time you can't criticize something you have never exposed yourself to.

Actually it was Robert Adler that created the wireless remote control...but that is for another debate...

Hate is the emotional response that is put forth by your ideology, umpteen times more then the few occasions you could point to within our ideology. It is the only way you on the left, know how to disagree. 8 years of Bush taught us this and is irrefutable.

What -has Palin done that would merit this much hate ? Name it ! Your ideology has show it's willingness to show compassion and forgiveness for the drugging and raping of a child by Roman Polanski... but chooses to outwardly and vocally hate Palin, simply do to your disagreement of her religion, love for this country's founding values and being a good parent and wife.

The lack of self awareness by some on the left... is astounding !

Funny, I actually listen to Glenn a few times a week. He predicted this about 6 months ago, when he was doing the Soros expose. He said the Sorosite's and Obamabots would come after him to try and silence him.

Go Glenn.. give em hell.

umm, what vf and newb said...
What I say...

Maybe not a gun, but how about a 30 million emails requesting donatrions to MoveOn.org to...
1) cast aspersion on conservatives regarding the shooting incident - MoveOn.org is wholly funded by the Soros

2) help destroy GB in the process...why do you think that happened? (I'll ask again...see if you can find a link and you'll have the answer)
