first Ill point out IM not there to see exactly what your doing, but Im sure with a more detailed question we can get you a few tips/answers
detailed inspection of the orriginal cover should give a good idea how it was assembled.
generally the foam gets glued with contact cement to the hinged cover and the leather cover gets stretched over both the foam and hard cover and glued in place, then on some console lids an inner lid gets screwed to the lid the covers glued too to cover the edge of the leather on many consoles, but there are a bunch of options and differant methods so pictures and more precise questions would help?
Im sure there guys here that can give better advice on interior work, as Ive only done about a dozen corvette interiors , seats, carpets ETC. and theres guys with far more experiance here!
but since this is a great basic question, lets look into it,
ANYONE GOT EXPERIANCE & INFO OR INSTRUCTIONS????

WRONG YEAR BUT SIMILAR INFO

64 Center Armrest

Thanks Grumpyvette

That was helpful but it looks like I will have to remove the shifter console to get to where the arm rest is attached. Does anyone know if taking out the shifter console ( and of course getting it back right) is difficult ?
