Last question for the day. I took the center gauge console out this weekend and am slowly discovering where the prior owner had gone with his golden screwdriver. 1981 C3 A/T. I took the console out and unpluged were needed (my current mission is the gauge lighting-there is none) I've checked all the usual stuff.

I did come across this unknown two wire connector on top of the center console while taking it out.

My question is: There is a two wire pigtail snap harness on the top of the center console. Just above the center AC vents. It originates from somewhere on the passenger side behind the dash. The pigtail unsnaps about 6" back, but there is no apparent reason for the two wires . They are screwed into the top of the console above the vent. There is a hole there, looks like maybe a light bulb socket (no socket housing though), and really no room. I would not see why there would be a light there. As it sits now the two wires are screwed separatly into the center console by seperate screws and there is a shallow hole- there is no lens of sort underneath. There is a approx 1" metal plate below the screws, but they are not making contact with it. There is some indication of melt or softening of the hole area. Was there a bulb there at one time or what is this for?????????? No power to the leads. Glovebox light works fine, thought it might come form there? I know this discription is poor, but it is the double wire connector on top of the center console. And they say a picture is worth a thousand words!

Bear with me because I am not sure how different the back of the center gauge console is between a 76 and 81.

In my car, right above the vent openings is the windsheild wiper controls. There is a two wire connector for the on off control and a sngle bulb socket for the "wiper control" indicator light.

Mine sets flush, however, the wiring may have been the same?? When the center console is in place you would not know the wires were up there behind until you pull it out and see the wire ends screwed into the top of the console. We are close, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for takin the time:thumbsup:

It is for a light.

I have a 78 Pace car, and the spot you are talking about actually has a light bulb housing that bolts below it not in the dash that points down to light up your climate controls. By the sounds of your post your are missing the entire housing that bolts to your gauge panel. There is a pig tail two wire that plugs in to where you are describing. Open the Light doc and you will see a picture of the housing from my car.
Hope this helps.

Okay.....I Have Now Seen The Light!! thanks. Looks like the previous golden screwdriver had taken the socket out. As I said, " A picture is worth a thousand words"!!! Can't wait to get home and check it out further. What a great forum. Thanks again! Tom
