I bought my car with 11k miles... it would appear that my K&N has gone another 25,000 miles without being cleaned.

It doesn't look dirty... ? How often should I clean the critter?

I think they recommend every 50k under normal driving conditions. :)

When it get's dirty it looses the red color and starts to look grey. Almost the same color the filter looks like after you clean it. It's not a bad idea to knock the pebbles and other debris out of there every once in a while. I usually clean mine before I put it away for the winter.

Believe or not the dirtier it gets ( to a point) the better they clean, so don't be so quick to clean it, the theory is the dust dirt acts like part of the filter media once it contacts the oil on the filter and removes dirt and dust better.
